Last two bars of Waltz for Mippy III... not sure how anyone gets a mute in during that short of a rest, though!

The sonatas by Thom Ritter George and Juraj Filas both call for muted sections. In my opinion they each use the mute properly, to change the sound quality, NOT just to achieve a softer dynamic. As far as do they sound “good,” that question has a lot of subjectivity. In my opinion, both are fine examples of tuba literature from respected composers. So I think each sounds good

I hope this helps!

Concertino for Tuba and Band by James Curnow has a muted section. Interestingly, none of the few Youtube videos out there (including the original recording by Barton Cummings) have the soloist muted in that section.

Of course, the reason for this might be that while you have just enough time to insert, you don't have a lot to remove. It's just after a fermata that leads into a cadenza.
