Bach mpces - EURO fitting?

Post by kathott »

Hello. Does Bach make EURO stems?
I recently started teaching a student who showed up with a new Holton MODEL BB460 tuba. The supplied mpce. “Holton #18” fits ALL the way into the receiver. I tried a handful of American mpces, all too deep a fitting. The receiver only takes EURO size acceptably.

thank you,
K.
*anticipating suggestions, I am not considering a replacement receiver, or sleeves.

I colleague of mine that has the Holton uses a Bach 18 that fits her receiver very well.

Comparing Bach to other mouthpiece they seem to be American/Standard to me.

The store may swap out the supplied mouthpiece with a Bach...
If this was a package deal sort of thing (or rent-to-own?) from a local music store and they're willing to swap out mouthpieces, I think it would be worth checking to see if they carry Schilke mouthpieces - they make Euro shanks - and have any on hand that they'd let him trade for. I'm thinking of one of their 'standard' mouthpieces like the 66, Helleberg, or 69C4...not the SHII, Geib or anything 'fancy.'

My experience is that after Bach and Conn, Schilke is the next most likely to be found in an average music store. Worth asking, at least.

The only Bach copy mouthpiece in Euro shank I can think of is Meinl Weston OEM mouthpiece marked Melton 24aw. I have one and it fits fine in Euro receiver and it measures 0.54” while regular 24aw is 0.52” that goes all the way in.

Wessex used to have a nifty little adapter thingy, it’s not on the web site, call them.

My Jinbao 520's receiver will also allow the entire shank of a Bach/Bach-copy mouthpiece to be inserted, but Schilke and Kelly mouthpieces fit properly.
