Places to Practice

Post by TubaofGilman »

Hello ladies and gentlemen. I have a daughter in grad school @ MUSC down in Charleston SC. She is staying downtown in an apartment and has nowhere to practice. She plays the 5/4 Wessex Luzern BBb tuba.
Any suggestions or ideas?

Is she in grad school for music, or something else? If something else, is there a music part of the school that might have practice rooms?

Check the lease and city ordinances. If it's not illegal... then just practice at home.

When I lived in NYC, it was part of the lease that practicing musical instruments was allowed from like 10am to 10pm (or rather, that residents "would not be made to suffer" from neighbors practicing musical instruments outside of those hours...). Now naturally, it's best to be a good neighbor and not annoy the people who live around you... but again, if it's not illegal...

Otherwise, yes, the music school could be an option. Unfortunately, in this era of locked doors, and key card access, things are harder than they used to be. At my grad school, I can pay some (large) fee to have access in non-peak hours (since I'm not a music major). 20 years ago in undergrad, you could just jimmy open the door or have a friend let you in, and just pick an open room or stairwell any time of day. Everyone knew the campus police that were on-duty, and everyone was generally cool about it.

I've spent a lot of time in Charleston; inside the arts/music building at the College of Charleston on George Street, there are 4-5 practice rooms on the second floor. Hope that works!

She’s receiving a medical degree. There’s no music program at the university.

Also worth considering a practice mute. I adore Schlipf, myself, but there are definitely several decent options out there.

I am amazed that anyone going to med school would even have time to practice. Good for her!

Speaking of Charleston and med school, a young lady who used to play in our community band recently graduated from the Citadel, where she became the first ever female drum major of the Citadel band. Then she got into med school and got a full ride from the Army to pay for it. That's what I call being an overachiever.

Might have to exchange for a few Sunday services or a few lessons.
MUSC does have a chapel, I've played a wedding there in the past.
