Well, after a lil trip to Barnes and Noble for my birthday yesterday, I came across the PJBE Greatest Hits CD and the 20th Century Album.
I immediately snatched these up as I had read from quite of few of you, my fellow tubenetters, recommended these. And after listening to these for the past few hours (basically listening a few times over and over) I have come to the conclusion that this is one of the best examples of chamber brass and full brass section playing. John Fletcher is at the top of his game with that luscious tone of his and I can't enjoy enough of this blend and beautiful core throughout the entire section.
Kudos to some great remastering. Sad to hear of the losses we've had out of this group... John Fletcher... Philip Jones...
I have to agree with others, a definite must for brass players.
Happy 4th, all.

After hearing the first CD and a half, I was going giddy about hearing the tuba solo on Bydlo when, out of nowhere, the horn player plays the tuba solo!!! Needless to say, I was furious at the arranger... anyway, the rest of the CD was spectacular, especially the Tchaikovsky (sp) waltz played by a tuba trio. Bravo!

If it is the same waltz I am thinking about, it was all done done by Fletcher himself!the Tchaikovsky (sp) waltz played by a tuba trio. Bravo!

Re: Philip Jones Brass Ensemble
I find it interesting that many American trumpeters despise the secco style of playing of the British trumpets. I find it a bit difficult to listen to at times as well. This could also start another conversation about short playing in general. I know that there is a corresponding article at the TUBANEWS website. It seems to me that American players draw the line at a certain length of note and will play no shorter. We tubas and euphoniums are quite often the worst culprits. Why is that?Billy M. wrote: I have come to the conclusion that this is one of the best examples of chamber brass and full brass section playing. Amazingly enough, I was researching what other albums they had currently available and for sure, the Sousa is being considered.TexTuba wrote:If you like those CDs, and I can tell you do, you will want to pick up one of their CDs of them playing Sousa marches. That's some of the best playing of Sousa I've heard and I've heard many groups. FWIW

Cannot reiterate enough, this is some of the finest brass playing on any recorded medium, if you do not have them, get 'em!
