WTB: BBb or CC tuba under $3000

Post by bort »

Interested to learn about tuba options, front action, BBb or CC, piston or rotary, that are in the $3000 or less range.

Must be:
Not Chinese
Not a King 2341 (sorry, just never loved them)
Fixed bell-up
Front action
Includes gig bag

Also not interested in a Piggy, or probably not Czech tubas in general.

CC preferred, but I realize that's a big ask at this price level.

At least 4 valves.

Condition isn't really important, just has to be a serious player, appropriate for regular use.

Pretty open to options, hoping to hear about things that are not at the stores right now, unlisted, or listed for sale here but maybe fell to the bottom of the list(?).

Thanks! :tuba:

Sorry -- rereading your post I see "No Chinese", but I think this is still worth a look.

Karl Ziess BBb tuba (B&S) or Yamaha 641 BBb.

Keep your eyes open and pounce if an older CC Mirafone 4v 186 appears...

Thanks guys -- I generally know the options, more curious what's available now, or people here looking to sell in the near future. Would probably want to stay in the upper part of my range?

Hi there. I have a 4 rotary valve Cerveny CC 601 I know you had said no to the Czech but she’s a great horn, big sound, have a hard case for it not in the best of shape but was looking to sell soon. If anyone else is interested contact me!

I have to figure out how to post photos is the trouble! The other issue is it doesn’t actually say 601 on it anywhere, that was Matt Walters choice when he took a look at photos, lead pipe is marked made in Czechoslovakia so it’s older.

I have a Conn 2j with a beautiful silver inner Bell! Send me a PM! Really great playing 3/4 with 4 valves. Feels like a flexible 4/4, but I wouldn't put it solo under a huge group. Great for jazz/quintets

I still have my WERIL 3/4 CC tuba, four piston valves, silver-plated. It's in near perfect condition. I was close to selling, but an interested party had to back off because his wife's car developed a need for expensive repairs. The tuba is built like a tank, with beautiful tone, impressive dynamic range, and good intonation. $1250 plus shipping. However, there is no case or bag.

Why not just SELL your tuba and NOT BUY another one right now - and not under your bread's back under control/saved back up - and buy what you REALLY want?

Otherwise, get rid of your self-imposed restrictions (as you're already admitting to yourself that you're temporarily lowering your standards), and pick up a used jimbo rotary C?
Maybe... But I'd rather have something than nothing, especially if things are bought/sold at realistic true values, to keep stuff relatively liquid. That is, I'm not selling things for a crazy amount just to try and get a few more bucks, and vice versa, I'm not looking to overpay (obviously).

More than anything, I'm just sort of reminded of lower prices tubas that I've owned in the past 10 years (MW-30, Marzan, etc) and think "yep, that would work just fine right now."

I have a 40 year old Mirafone 187 Bb with 5 rotors. I have been told it is a 187 but it could be a 186. Serial number 11477. I am not sure how to tell the difference. I want to buy a new one but I also have a St. Petersburg Bb 201 and I do not need three tubas.

The Miraphone has a lot of dents and folds in the bell but it plays great. Finish is fair. New lead pipe replaced at a cost of $ 900. Comes with a Protec gig bag with some resown handles. My golden retriever decided to chew on the original black straps.

I have over $ 4000 in this but I would consider $ 3500. I know it is over $ 3000 but it is a Mirafone. Look at the price of new ones.

I've got a De Prins 4-Valve tuba. Probably a small 4/4 size. No gigbag, but I do have an MTS Hard Case that fits perfectly. Great playing tuba. Made in Belgium. Imported by Walter Sear. Currently asking $1,500.

Thanks, everyone for all of the public and private replies. Not quite sure which direction I'll go in yet... but there seem to be plenty of options! Thank you all! :)
