Wessex French Tuba (in C) SOLD

Post by johnfuente »

Hello all. Thanks for checking out my listing. The horn has been sold.

I am selling a lightly played Wessex French Tuba. I am parting with this horn because I am focusing on my tuba playing in jazz combos and am no longer doubling trombone parts. My new (to me) Yamaha YCB-621 has high range and more to cover heads, soloing, etc, so I am now back to packing just one horn for gigs.

This French tuba is a fun horn to play. It is in near perfect condition. There is one spot where a brace for the main tuning slide was moved to improve tuning, otherwise, it is straight out of the factory condition. Mid and high range are solid. Low range (valves 4, 5, and 6) have a learning curve, but I went from stuffy to legit with some practice. Valve alignment and tuning slide work were done by Dana Hofer in Chicago.

The horn comes with a standard Wessex mouthpiece and hard case (that includes backpack-style shoulder straps). If interested, I have two custom Schilke mouthpieces that can accompany it. One is a Reichenbach bass trombone mouthpiece (excellent attack and projection for jazz/soloing) and the other is a custom Schilke 62 ( both made specifically to fit this horn).

Check out the pictures here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... sp=sharing

Horn, stock mouthpiece and case = $2000
Schilke Reichenbach = $100
Schilke Custom 62 = $200

Buyer pays shipping from Chicagoland area.

John, What does the horn weigh (without mouthpiece)? Thanks. Paul.

Good question. I'll put it on the scale tonight and let you know. I play it standing and ergonomically it feels good (no stress on either hand). That said, the extra valve set does make it a bit heavier than a traditional baritone/euphonium.

Actually, the Wessex site has the answer: 9.5lbs. I'll check that tonight. If you don't see a reply from me it means it's confirmed at 9.5lbs.

Sooooooo, if one is proficient at CC tuba fingerings, this is the same thing up an octave, correct? I assume the left hand has the usual down a 4th, the un-usual down a 5th (like a quint valve), and then some sort of tuning clean-up valve.

Correct, same fingering up the octave. The additional (5 & 6) valves help to play pedal range so you can cover traditional literature. Flat tone 5th (adjustable to flat ½ tone) and 6th valve puts down into F. If interested new price is $2500, buyer pays shipping.

You may want to mention that the instrument you are selling is silver plated, otherwise your price looks like it is only $25 less than a new Wessex French tuba. In reality you are a very respectable $475 less than new.

Yes, I know, the pictures show it in silver. It doesn't hurt to give as much information as you can.

Good luck with the sale, it looks like it's in great shape.
