Gold mouthpiece with silver rim?

Post by bort »

Does anyone out there have a photo of a gold plated mouthpiece with a silver rim?

This is the reverse of the usual silver mouthpiece with gold rim...

Wondering if it's been done before? I like the look of gold, but the feel of silver.

Anything out there?

No photo. But my gold-plated mouthpieces, if they were (properly) plated over silver, end up with a silver rim eventually.

Which means: You might find a gold-plated version of what you like, and then buff the gold off of the rim. Make sure the gold is plated over silver, though.

I would expect these people could do it.

A Doug Elliot setup might be the ideal starting point given there are three distinct parts which could be plated separately.

Though honestly, I wouldn't bother. It will be expensive. The appeal of gold is the softness on the rim, but you don't want that part. So you'd end up with the expense without the benefit.

A HKOTE coated MK7 cup by Dave Houser sorta gives you the idea of the look:

If you want to just see how it would look, umm, sorta:

Holy Cow... 1) the level of vanity involved... and 2) the level of artistry involved...

I do like the gold/silver look though. I wish I liked gold rims, but just never liked the feel. (Time to cue Joe's recommendation to get stainless, and then scuff it up...) :)

I almost bought a silver Monette a few years ago, because I liked the mouthpiece, but not the gold rim.

The surface of the stainless Kelly MP rims is less smooth than the nicely polished Blokepieces, I found the feel very similar to silver rims.
