March Practice
Since I have some extra time, I decided to try to get my chops in shape by working my way through some marches along with some awesome bands. This is certainly challenging, but still a lot of fun! Please forgive my inconsistencies...a work in progress. I will work to refine these marches and continue adding new marches until I go back to work.

That's awesome! I am not very tech savy, so I will just have to practice until I can keep up, lol.Three Valves wrote:I downloaded the Marine Corp band Sousa marches and sheet music.

Re: March Practice
Thank you very much! In the Storm and Sunshine is also one of my favorites. I will never forget the first time that I heard the Eastman Wind Ensemble "Screamers" album with In the Storm and Sunshine as the opening track. I was completely blown away! I still absolutely love that recording and the march. The U.S. Navy Band recording that I found to play along with is also amazing! Such a great band.Adam C. wrote:Love that you included In Storm and Sunshine, one of my favorites. Nice job.

The mention of Fennell brings back some memories of a great ensemble. Rumor has it that he was a bearcat to work for. Maybe taskmaster is a more fair description. As an aside, over twenty-five years ago I played second horn in a good quality local band. The excellent first horn player was Fennell's former wife, a very nice lady. Can't remember her first name.

Re the His Honor March thread, I ran across this impressive performance by a Japanese Army band (district?) which I believe is not their top "DC"-type unit. Whatever, they do a great job, with crystal clear articulation.

They are actually eighth notes, and it's written in cut-time. I can barely keep up with the Eastman recording, lolThree Valves wrote:The Circus Bee.![]()

Re: March Practice
Bloke, thank you! I do get to play marches fairly often. However, I usually don't play them at "circus" tempo since we are usually marching the troops. I can't imagine having to play the Stars and Stripes in those keys, lol

Bloke, that's awesome! No way I could have played that fast in high school. I have been practicing the Circus Bee for years and still can't play it as fast clean as those Eastman guys and gals, lol.

Re: March Practice
Euphonium parts are fun. I played euphonium(actually bell front baritone) in high school. My band director didn't have a euphonium player, so he asked if I could play it. I signed out the school baritone, which is all they had and learned (kinda) how to play it. I ended up making last chair all state, and I was the only one sporting a bell front baritone
I really enjoyed the parts. I just didn't have the high range and technical skill really to justify sticking with it. I kinda also love playing low notes, lol

Re: March Practice
Wow, you meet so many amazing people playing music. Some of my friends from school, who were excellent musicians, decided to pursue other careers in addition to continuing playing at a high level. One of the things that I have enjoyed throughout my military career is playing in the community bands/ensembles around where I have been stationed. I have met so many talented musicians who had very successful careers outside of music, but they still love playing and sharing music with others.
