Alexander 163 CC

Post by Brendan Bohnhorst »

I have finally decided to sell my Alexander 163 CC. Asking $6500 and open to a reasonable offers.

Open partials on this one are better than any other Alexander I have played. The G at the bottom of the staff for me is great open as is the E in the staff. I do use two alternate fingerings on D and C# in the staff. That is basically it for the pitch adjustments. The first and fourth slide are very well aligned and easy to move if you would like.

It has five valves and a slightly uncommon 5th valve set up. The fifth valve on this tuba is a flat minor second with a minor third extension on the tuba if you prefer that set up. This give you a great low C# and F# fingered 45 and you still get a really solid low F 245. The only note that is not really available with this set up is C# right above the fundamental which is easy with the Miraphone style minor third set up.

The linkage was updated about 10 years ago. It comes with an Altieri gig bag that has seen some use but is very serviceable. Tuba is located near Grand Rapids, MI. I can ship at your expense (will not send for trial) and would be willing to drive some to facilitate not shipping this tuba.

Examining the photos and looking at the valve caps on the back along with the braces, this Alex is from the early to mid 60's. Alexander tubas from this time period which include a 5th valve don't come up for sale very often. The condition of this tuba is beautiful, and it will turn heads when you play it. Alexander's have a learning curve based on air. Once you learn how to move the right air, the intonation and sound will come alive. For what this instrument can do in almost any situation, it is worth the price. If I didn't already own four Alexander's, I'd be tempted to buy it myself.

Ted, thanks for the kind words! Your pretty much spot on with the age guess, sometime between 1966 and 1970 on this tuba. The previous owner couldn't remember exactly when he bought it and had purchased 2 of them a few years apart.

Sold, pending pick up.
