Re: Bass Trumpets
I have a Rudy Meinl Bb bass trumpet. Plays great, no dings. Garland nickel 8" bell. Very big sound, but good high range. I'm not using it much these days and could sell. I think the horn is from the 70's, a classic. Three rotor valves. I don't have a main tuning slide trigger but my tech could probably install one for a few hundred, or yours can too. No bass trumpet plays that well in tune and they all need a tuning slide trigger. Even the super expensive Thein has one. If you are interested, I can sen pics. I'd probably want something approaching $3K, which would be a very fair price. steven@rf2bits.com" target="_blank.

I have the Thein and play it a lot. It's pretty well behaved. The only note I habitually use the trigger on is the 8th partial A with first and second valves, that and any 4th valve plus explorations into the lower register. It's a little less in tune with the set of Bb slides installed but still not bad. I find the trigger is mostly useful for adjusting chords to just intonation while still blowing through the center of the slot.stevennorsworthy wrote:No bass trumpet plays that well in tune and they all need a tuning slide trigger. I also own a Bach bass trumpet which has been fitted with a main tuning slide trigger. The intonation is not bad at all but not as good as the Thein. The trigger is absolutely necessary with a 3-valve instrument as you can't stretch your hand far enough on a 9' instrument to compensate for the sharp 1+3 and 1+2+3 combinations and they are tough to lip that far.

Re: Bass Trumpets
I just played the Janacek and purchased a Schiller (Jinbao) Bb piston Bass Trumpet. I had a 5 year old Jinbao Rotary and Piston Bass Trumpets to compare it against and the other person in my section had a Bach.
The Bach was hands and feet better than any of the clones - both in terms of playability and intonation. The newest Jinbao (Schiller) was second - you can tell they've been making improvements. It was what I used on the concert. The other two horns (the older rotary and piston chinese horns) were terrible. I gave them back to their owners without a second thought. In fact, I had them first and they were so bad I bought the Schiller hoping it would even be just a little bit better. It was LEAPS AND BOUNDS better.

Did this ever hit the market?Wyvern wrote: ↑Mon Jul 29, 2019 2:52 pm Wessex is working on a new bass trumpet in collaboration with the principal trombone of a major US orchestra - but it won’t be out before 2020. That will be available in Bb and C with 4-valves.
At that time the present bass trumpets in catalog will be discontinued, although like Tom, I have not heard many bad comments on these, and I don’t recall any returned.

Looks like rotary and piston Bb models are here: https://us.wessex-tubas.com/collections ... nd-cornets
I've never played a bass trumpet but have found them intriguing, probably since I started on trumpet.
I think Daniel Herskedal really makes a bass trumpet sing. Check out his Slow Eastbound Train album.
