Just for the record, googling "she's a nice piece of meat" is not wise.Doc wrote:Yeah, she's a nice piece of meat alright.

I don't like berets very much, although we used them every year I was in college band (I think the tubas in high school used them, too).
I HATE ballcaps in uniform, though. They look fine on baseball players and golfers, but anywhere else, they just look cheap.
If you can use shakos and not have them knocked all out of place, that's fine. Not even ballcaps look as bad as a section of crooked shako plumes (and shakos without plumes look equally lame).
I've gone hatless, too, but I'm not the kind of guy to pay attention to my hairstyle, so I always looked like a furball.
Garrison covers don't look right on anything but a very military-inspired uniform. Same with service caps.
So, as a lesser of two.. I mean, several... evils, I'd say go ahead with the berets. See if you can source some military-style ones, too; they look cleaner than the amoeba-like flop style.

Since this is "the thread that wouldn't die" I will ask two questions relating to the current US Army beret:
1. I am sure there are interesting standards as to how it is supposed to appear. What are they, and how does a soldier accomplish this?
2. What is the flash on the front that soldiers are now pinning their unit crests to? I have asked active duty personnel and I have never got an answer.

I thought of that after I made the post -- yeah, they're different, they can wear 'em.Tom Holtz wrote:Velvet Knights rule!Leland wrote:I HATE ballcaps in uniform, though.
I'll amend my opinion about ballcaps; that they look terrible on any uniform -- unless the ensemble puts jokes onto the field. VK never had cadet-style or military-esque uniforms anyway, although I did like the hats they had before, too.

If you wear bandanas and I can see you on the field, then at least I know you are not out in the parking lot stealing my car. Bandanas, especially black bandanas, worn on the head denote gangster.Sam wrote:What do you guys think about bandanas? We have a mostly navy blue uniform (navy blue, green and vegas golds are our colors) Do you guys think a green bandana would look good skull cap stype?

The current US Army beret is all black, the crest is blue and has stars surrounding the edge. Check out any military clothing shop for a picture (www.rangerjoes.com).manatee wrote:Since this is "the thread that wouldn't die" I will ask two questions relating to the current US Army beret:

I hated the beret I had to wear with my sousaphone in high school. We looked like a bunch of french schoolgirls. The military style is the way to go.
As far as military standards and getting the military look, it takes some work, but a little time can get you a really sharp looking beret. Check out this link for the military standards: http://www.detrick.army.mil/soldiers/beret.pdf
Although not officially sanctioned, most soldiers use a safety razor to shave all the fuzz off prior to wearing. Then you use cold water to drench the beret and put it on and shape it to your head. You pull all the material to the right and drape it over your right ear. See the link above for the standards. Once shape, you leave it to dry and voila! You have a sharp looking beret.
You can also buy "pre-shaved, pre-shaped" berets from http://www.rangerjoes.com This is what I'd recommend. Tell your band director you want to look like men, not a bunch of french sissies.
I hope that helps.

Not always for the better though..Leland wrote:I remember when Army berets were distinctive, being Special Forces only...
Oh well, guess some things just have to change...
For marching, I'd rather wear this any day.

Black goes well with most uniforms, and when properly blocked it's better tahn any ball-cap or beret

Heh... yeah, that'd be cool, but it doesn't quite look right on any other uniform; it even looks weird when I see cops with black caps of the same cut.ThomasDodd wrote:For marching, I'd rather wear this any day.

There were pictures posted online a couple years ago previewing the proposed new Air Force camouflage uniform, and it included the same eight-sided construction for the cover. Among the comments posted, nobody liked it, not because they thought it was ugly -- but because they felt that it just copied a design that is so distinctively used by another branch.

It could be done right. Or perhaps follow a similar concept, not the octagon, but something distinctive. Still looks better that the round ones the Army has, or a ball cap. And just a bout anything beats a beret.Leland wrote:Heh... yeah, that'd be cool, but it doesn't quite look right on any other uniform; it even looks weird when I see cops with black caps of the same cut.
Never seen a cop with one.
The Navy units that don't wear dungarees use it too, like the CBs or SPs, without the EGA.but because they felt that it just copied a design that is so distinctively used by another branch.
I think the SEALs use it too. So it not a particulary Marine Corps item.
