Why not put a recording of your most recent performance of it on the web, in order that we may decide if we agree with you?

Dan is a fine and serious student of music and one of the most musically informed students I have ever taught . Whether or not he has performed the concerto in question has nothing to do with how he perceives this piece relative to the other works of John Williams.cornholio wrote:Do you really like the John Williams concerto?? Okay, Dave. That's competely fine. But, a truly sucessful musician will generally have the witts to know when to keep their mouth shut about issues that are this ludicrous. If he knows anything about people, he knows that the only things that will happen because of this kind of post is a few people will agree, and most people will have their feathers ruffled. And, after thinking about that kind of thing, why would he actually post what he's posted?? No real good can come of it.
Now, I personally don't care if he finds no point to etudes. It doesn't phase me in the least because his opinion isn't worth any more or less than mine. I'll play mine, let them serve their purpose, and be a better performer because of it. But, when he starts saying that they are pointless, and I know that to be completely un-true, that's when I can truly say that he doesn't know what he's talking about.
Sure. he may be a great player, but that doesn't mean that he knows anything about tubists that develop normailly. An example: Floyd Cooley is one of the most wonderful performers in the world. But, a former teacher of mine studied with him and informed me that Floyd's approach involves telling a student "this is what you need to do." That's cool, but he also just assumes that the student will get it without any extra direction. This is because he is a natural player and really didn't have to follow many routines to grow. He just "had it." As a result, he is a teacher that people say "gives you the education just by listening to him." Now, I'm not docking Floyd as a teacher, and I'm not saying that he didn't work hard to get where he is today. I wouldn't be that stupid. But, it's just an example. If the kid doesn't know what it really takes to develop most players, he won't make a good educator and also should not voice his opinions on these issues, since it is an almost foregone conclusion that he will give incorrect information.
That's just what I get out of this kids post.
Hope I don't offend anybody with this, but feel free to email me off the board and let me know if I have.

I was in no way defending the original poster, as I find his assertions too idiotic to warrant a response.
I was, instead, responding to a remark directed at one of my former guys that stated, perhaps a bit too vigorously, his dislike of the John Williams concerto. Dan is a good guy and I felt like the "If you can't nail it, you have no room to criticize" argument was unnecessary. If I had to perform every piece that I didn't like, just to prove something to some yahoo's request, I'm sure the board would have a good chuckle at my expense!
I am the biggest fan of etudes on God's green earth. I play at least a dozen a day and, as a teacher, feel like they open the student's eyes to new music frequently.
I am sorry if my defense of Dan ws out of line.
Hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend!
Best regards,
Dave
