Mouthpiece Question

Post by Mark »

I have two mouthpieces that have the same rim and the same cup diameter. Mouthpiece A has a shallower cup and a smaller throat bore than mouthpiece B.

It is much easier to play low notes on mouthpiece B. So, is this due to the deeper cup or larger bore?

Yes, very likely.

I have been meaning to experiment with a saxophone mouthpiece when I get a half hour free to do it. I'm going to fill it in a little with some beeswax, or something else if that doesn't work, to test my assumptions about tuning and chamber size.

Something like that might work with tuba mouthpieces, too? Dip mouthpiece in melted wax, stem down so the wax comes up to the top of the bore, remove and cool. Coating of wax on the inside shrinks the bore. Repeat ad libitum. The cup could also be made shallower this way, though I suppose it would be trickier, and it would be hard to vary these two parameters independently.

I'm not saying you can make yourself a C4 this way, it's only for the crudest sort of experimentation.
