As I understand it Sterling was founded by one or more craftsmen leaving B&H/Besson.bloke wrote:Are/were those things manufactured by Boosey? They sure appear similar...
The valve block is very similar to that of my Besson 981. One possibility might be, that Sterling bought the valve block from B&H/Besson.
Aint gonna unpack my 981 at this late point of the night cum early morning. Yet one difference between the Sterling and the Besson 981 strikes me:
The Sterling appears to have a larger bore through the top bow area.
Mr. Bobo in a recent thread was quoted for calling the Brit Eb basses oversize euphs, which was not meant kindly.
Mr. Bobo is right in his evaluation. I hope to get the time to expand on this in a later thread.
I haven’t heard much of Mr. Bobo’s tuba playing, but what I heard didn’t please my ears.
Mr. Bobo undoubtedly is an extraordinarily gifted musician, but he should have been a string player of the type, who scratches the bow new the frog for the purpose of "expressivity".
My playing on my 981 and my YM BBb also are inspired by string playing (I have played bowed string bass also). But in my ears tubists should let themselves inspire of the singing bass-lines provided by good cellos and basses. They shall not try to emulate the violin part of Ravel’s Tzigane.
Ok, I ended up writing quite a bit of the announced posting already. Just to set the proportions right: Mr. Bobo is a world level top musician, and I am just my own little me.
