Well boys and girls, challenge o' the day: Play Russlan and Ludmilla in the Baylor University Basketball arena(seating@>6,000). Key= Dmajor(the original, but, for band I would not say"correct", key) Tempo= way too fast for comfort(but that's never stopped us before!)
Go Bears! Felt like we should come out onstage to the words,"Y'all ready fuh dis?" Seriously, though, great crowd and the concert went pretty well.
Back in Denton tomorrow!
On, Wisconsin!

Waco hospitality
My regards to all Traveling Jarheads,
Funny, I always felt particularly parched whilst passing through Waco. Seems the absence of malted beverage made the heart grow fonder, or some such nonsense. Except for the time the old Chevy’s thermostat gave up the ghost, I mostly thought of Waco as a spot on the map between Dallas and Austin, depending on which azimuth my bleary eyes were focused, either offering more in the way of refreshment than the home of the Bears.
I am downright relieved to hear y’all are headin’ back to Denton (civilize-ation) where the ladies are lovely, the sunsets serene, and the mascots are the MEAN GREEN EAGLES!

The band rocked us in Denton tonight! I was sitting right in Mark's and Matt's bells, and it was great. Everyone was really impressed, especially a Russian exchange student who kept going on about "the perfect band."
Hope you enjoyed the Denton nightlife...yeah right.
See you in 5 more years!

The Armadillo Dome= BIG FUN!
Folks, the "A" program is now the winner o' the bunch. Just before we get into the Knox arrangement of "God of Our Fathers" Thiele leans over and sez "This is gonna be fun..." He was so right. Horn section reaching critical mass at the end of "Estancia". Playing "Carnival Overture" right out of the box...did I mention the $2 margaritas at Sweetwater? A great time was had by all. Amarillo is going to have a lot to live up to.
Leland , Mr. Schooley is doing real well down here as a collitch stoodunt, but as they say, "You can take the contra player out of the D&B, but you can't take the D&B out of the contra player."

I think the answer was in his first sentence:JCradler wrote:"Seems the absence of malted beverage made the heart grow fonder, or some such nonsense. "
"Crickets" was the name of the place the band discovered today. Something like 108 beers on tap. Pool tables, darts, open 'til 2. Karl, where were you lookin'?
Fan 'em boys, indeed....

He probably (like a lot of people) assumed that the hometown of a Baptist University would be dry, and kept on driving. Far from dry, Waco has about the same alcohol availability as any other college town I've been in, including Denton. Actually, I think it was the FIRST place I ever saw beer in a fast-food restaurant (the Long John Silver's over on... is that 5th street and I-35?)Karl wrote:Funny, I always felt particularly parched whilst passing through Waco.

The Armadillo Dome?!? You know about the schools, but you never hear the little details like that. You can tell you grandkids, "I've played in the Armadillo Dome!" Is the Knox arrangement of God Of Our Fathers the manuscript one that starts in C and ends in G? I haven't seen that in years. It's about time it came out of the archives.
Schooley! Did they put him in the marching band? Good to hear he's doing well. $2 margaritas would make any campus look good.

I hope the Murchisons feel like they got their money's worth. Then again, looks don't matter. It's how badly the clarinets get buried that counts.
Speaking of The Creature, I heard he's recovered enough from the softball injury that he's playing Oktoberfest gigs. Not his full creatonic self yet, but it's only a matter of time.

I'm sure he's pretty upset about that... lolJCradler wrote:Leland , Mr. Schooley is doing real well down here as a collitch stoodunt, but as they say, "You can take the contra player out of the D&B, but you can't take the D&B out of the contra player."

Yeah, he's having a real good time at UNT. His nickname in the marching band is the same as mine here -- he got a laugh when they started calling him "Grandpa".

This new learning amazes me: perhaps I'll take up foot-washing, speaking in tongues, or reconsider my preference in fast food...
Hope y'all enjoy El Paso, where this old Texas boy was foaled. Grew up listenin' to the coyote's wail every night under cloudless skies and millions of stars. Y'all would never consider crossing the border into Juarez to sample the delights of Mexico, would you? Mom used to work the Camino Real, but that's an old painful story...

Tell the rest of the tour band that there's a new 14-foot-tall statue of John Philip Sousa guarding the entrance to the new band hall at Marine Barracks. The dedication ceremony was today. It's impressive. Almost as tall as Tiedeman.
Was Cradler able to play the concert tonight? If he watched the entire Wisconsin/Penn State game, I'm worried he'll be too despondent to operate the horn. If we need to fly Crawford out to El Paso to finish the tour, let us know right quick. The Badgers could have used Sousa's statue at wide receiver today.
Only two weeks left of tour. The bus rides start getting lo-o-o-o-o-o-ong...

Nope, didn't see the slaughter....
Spent the afternoon in Carlsbad Caverns- for once I had a cave to hide in while the Badgers gagged on their oatmeal.
Artesia NM, sharing the hotel with a slew of hot-air balloon crews. There's a punchline in there somewhere.
Today, Lubbock(yes, back into Texas.....)
