Stand Tunes

Post by Benjamin »

Here is a question for those who are in or have ever been in a high school or college marching band. When your up in the stands are your favorite songs to play. I myself am a fan of playing Hey Baby, Kerry on my Wayword Son, Soul Finger, and Jungle Boggie. Of course there are others I like but those are my favorites. So what stand tunes do other TubeNet users like to play?

Years ago when the first movie of the series came out, we played the original "Rocky" theme in marching band and in a parade where the judges were in an area with several connected tall brick buildings on both sides of the street. Since this was the first time almost everybody had heard it, before it became overplayed and trite, the effect of the reverberation off the buildings on the fanfare, reinforced by the sousaphones coming in on the first entrance, was enough by itself to get us a top rating that year.

In High school it always seemed to be 25 Or 6 To 4 by Chicago
In University, Maynard Ferguson's Birdland sure seemed to be what we blew the most

The theme from Hawaii 5-0. It used to get the fans up and dancing.

My favorites would probably be Free Ride, Evil Ways, or.....my personal favorite ever ... I Want You Back by Jackson 5. That bass line is sweet.

Playing in the stands at Football games

Post by Tuba-G Bass »

When I was in High School, we played out of a book that had
all the traditional college fight songs, plus for us Tuba's, we
had the Jazz standard Watermelon Man, re-written to give the tubas the lead part,
plus it was traditional for the senior member of the tuba line to start the song as a solo.
It would have been cool to play a Iron Maiden or Metallica song,
it was the mid-80's, Metal's heyday.
Cheers,

I guess I went to a completely different type of high school than you guys. We play all rap songs in the stands and standard show music for half-time. We were about 50/50 in terms of race. My favorite stands tunes were:

"Never Scared"
"Girlfriend"
"P.I.M.P."
and "Mr. Pooky"

Rap music, we've only got one song that I think you can call rap. We play Crazy in Love. I would not mind hearing some marching band versions of rap.

The Budwiser song... but that was the late 70's.

My favorite that my daughter's high school plays, Peter Gunn.

We are playing I Like The Way You Move by Outkast in our shwo this year. It starts with a tuba soli!! besides that.....the tuba part is really boring. My favorite song in the show this year is Land of Make Believe by Chuck Mangione. We have a weird combo as far as our show goes. It's the theme from shaft, zoot suit riot, I like the way you move, then land of make believe

Um, this year we played Gwen Stefani's Hollaback Girl, which was cool if only in that the crowd loved it, and few other bands played stuff like it.

Last year, my tuba quartet went and played for the second euphonium's school band, and afterward we all played with the pep band. It was kind of cool having a couple kids with 1291s sitting around outblowing a section of sousaphones on the standard pep band repertoire (Hey Baby, Eye of the Tiger, etc.). I'm not claiming to be very loud: the other tuba player was outblowing them by himself anyway.
