Rebirth of York Monster Eb

Just two weeks ago, I took delivery on a York Monster Eb tuba that was modified to my specifications. It turned out GREAT!!! In that I no longer have work space, the actual assembly was expertly done by Bob Pallansch of Falls Church Virginia.

The stock York Monster Eb tuba has a 19 1/2" diameter bell and a .656" valve bore with a small moouthpiece receiver. I found the .656" valve bore rather restrictive.

The modifications were as follows:

- Standard American size mouthpiece receiver by King.
- Leadpipe = Large Allied Universal leadpipe
- Piston valves 1, 2, 3 and 4 = .687" bore. Two Reynolds sousaphone 3 valve sections were combined to make one 4 valve set for the York. The valve set is front action.
- Valve plumbing = Reynolds and King
- Rotary fifth valve = .690" bore from Meinl-Weston. The thumb linkage was designed by Mr. Pallansch.

The result is a huge sound, good high and low registers as well as great overall intonation. My thanks to Mr. Pallansch for his patience and superb workmanship in making this design idea of mine a reality.

I found the .656" valve bore rather restrictive.

Could you enlarge on that, so to speak?

Does the new .687 valve section sound brighter or edgier, for example? Of course you probably haven't played the original tuba for a few months and then with a different mouthpiece, but anything that jumps out at you.

Glad to hear that Bob worked something out for you! Got any pics! Maybe Bob can fashion some of those extra sousaphone parts into a new locomotive for yer train set!
