If G. Meinl can get Al Baer in his camp, he will make an enormous leap in his "anschluss" and plans to "rule the world" of tuba manufacturers..........Will Al be tubadom's Neville Chamberlain?? Stay tuned to TubeNet for future results!

Did anyone catch the American Brass Quintet recital/clinic?

Yep, I did - both of them

The first was very late at night, didn't start until 10.45pm by which time I for one and plenty of other folks were wacked. They went into dreamy C16 Italian Madrigals and other similar stuff - the playing was exquisite but it was just to late for this programme. I left early as the matches couldn't keep my eyes open.
They did a second set in the Merle Reskin Theatre which was more of a workshop talking and demonstrating both music and performance techniques as needed in Brass Chamber music. Again, a session of the highest order. The use of 2 Flugelhorns in some of the pieces as opposed to 2 Trumpets was facinating, in the right context the music positively glowed with the change of tone colour. They also swapped the seating around according to the demands of the music - in canonic writing the trumpets (or trombones) were on opposite sides of the group to give a slightly antiphonal feel to proceedings.

In spite of the fact that we had no Tuba player

these two sessions were for me two of the absolute highspots of a very interesting few days.

Just thought I'd give a bit of clarification on the horn subject.....
Yes, there is a new tuba that will be released in the next 6 months. It's a 6/4 and it's a completely new horn. That is, new, tapers, bores, pipe, everything... The only thing that is not new is the use of the Fafner bell. So yes Charlie, here is your wish...
I've already played the proto type and we've made all the changes to make one INCREDIBLE horn.. I used the horn with the Phil. on Mahler 5 while on tour in Munich.. All I can say is, WOW!! Great intonation, sound, ease of play, great ergos, what more could you want. Meinl dealers should have pictures of the new horn by now or will have them soon.
