Along with Joes suggestions, I suggest you buy the Castle Jazz Band recordings, any of the Bob Scoby incarnations, and any of the Firehouse 5+2 recordings. You will hear Bob Short on the former, he is the King of the 2 beat, laying down tasty lines with perfect time and one of the best tuba sounds in the universe. Don Kinch or George Bruns will be on the latter, they just flat out play the tuba as if it were the most fun thing to do before, during, or after sex. All of them are adherents to the West Coast style, nothing fancy and 2 beat, just well played time machines. Good Luck. Oh yeah, some tasty solos on the FF5+2!!!!

On the topic, if any of you ever get the chance to hear tuba playerGene Mayl and his '50's-'60's Dixieland Rhythm Kings (especially a very rare LP called "DRK in HiFi"). The guy is still alive and playing I'm told, but now only string bass. In his prime there wasn't anyone playing tuba who sounded any better!
BTW, if anyone has that old album converted to CD, I'd very much appreciate a chance to buy a copy!
