USC Tuba section on KRTH 101 - Los Angeles

Sorry for the late notice on this. We're taking a group of USC Trojan Marching Band alumni on KRTH 101 tomorrow morning (the 4th). We'll be on the Hollywood Hamilton show from 7:30 a.m. or so until 10 a.m. KRTH is doing USC-related stuff all day in run-up to the Rose Bowl Trojan/Longhorn donnybrook.

Instrumentation is five tubas and two euphoniums, and we'll be doing arrangements of SC band rock charts (In the Stone, Louie Louie, Sunshine of Your Love, Carry on My Wayward Son, etc.), in addition to Fight On! and Conquest.

Unfortunately, I don't believe KRTH has either a web broadcast presence, or any affiliates who might be broadcasting simultaneously. I'll try and get an audio capture for anyone who might be interested in hearing it, but doesn't have access.

Regardless of where your collegiate loyalties lie, or whether or not you could give a sh*t about college ball (or any sports, for that matter), this should be a fun gig to listen to.

I missed the show... How did it sound? Did you happen to get a recording?

The radio station will be sending a CD, and I'll post an MP3 when I get it. We'd done this gig back in '88 and '89, and it was much different then. At that time, we were basically on-air guests for a couple hours, and they'd periodically come to us, chat a bit, let us play a tune - good gig.

This time around, it was more comedy gagster stuff with the DJs joking around as we played, so on and so forth. We only played Conquest, and a tiny bit of Sunshine of Your Love. Everyone seemed to like us, so I guess it went over well.

The game, on the other hand...

Yes indeed, my friend - it *was* a great time! Much different gig this time around, though. When were on in '89, it was in various bits over the course of a couple hours. This time around, it was Conquest, just a few bars of Sunshine of Your Love, and some banter. One break, that was it.

Oh well...

I'm still trying to get a CD from the radio station. It won't be anything to write home about, but what do you expect at 7:30 in the morning???

Myself (Dave Amason), Jesus "Chuy" Martinez (of Disneyland's Bayou Brass), Zach Collins (grad student of Tommy Johnson - monster player!), Tim O'Brien (SC grad, now a band director), Dave Hayami (another SC grad, also a band director), Woody Kane (former USC/Disney musician, now a big-time Hollywood location manager), and Jonathan Chang (SC grad, formerly of Disneyland's Magic Kingdom Corps, and now a band director).

Great bunch of guys, lots of fun!!

Well, it took the radio station a while to finally send me a CD of our appearance. Things may not have turned out how we Trojans would've liked that fateful evening, but we sure had some fun in the morning on the radio station.

As was the case 17 years ago when we did this the first time, I was literally up all night writing out the arrangement of Conquest. Wrote the last note, jumped in the shower, hit the road, played the gig.

A little rough around the edges in some places, but remember that this was a studio full of tuba players at 7:30 IN THE MORNING who hadn't yet had their donuts and beer.

That was just plain cool.....wait, did I actually say that about anything associated with a marching band? Indeed I did. What a hoot. Congrats!!!!!! Oh, and sorry about the game. Alot of casino odds makers were plenty happy about that outcome to be sure.

Jackpot! I began reading the list of names, hoping I'd hit paydirt. I played tuba in the Disney Band when Woody played bass bone. Figures he's a bigshot in Hollywood now. Got any contact info for the big man? Gotta drop him a line. Good times.

Yeah, Woody's been doing location managing for television and film productions. Great guy! Sure enjoyed marching with him in the band. Woody's got a Woody's got a Woody's got a Woody's got a Woody's got a....

To say the tuba section actually "marched" would be stretching the defintion of that concept to unheard of extremes. In that light, I think you can be forgiven for your spontaneous complimentary "blurtings". Not the first time a rockin' tuba choir inspired a moderate loss of bodily and/or mental control.

I'm thinking we're about due for a guest appearance with Lon Bronson and the boys. Too bad they don't have a venue for such a slammin' horn line.

And Celine Dion gets a whole frikkin' theater.

If ever there was a sign of the apocalypse, smart money says that's it...

Or seven tubas trying to slug through Cream at 7:30 in the morning...

Unfortunately, I think Lon is no longer at the Golden Nugget. Kickin' band and a great late night hang after a gig. His band is the best, I hope to see him elsewhere on the strip.
