Are these things safe to breathe?

My question concerns Tarnishield, Mr. Metal, and similar products that many of us use on our silver plated horns, and secondarily, the various lubricants (valve oil, slide grease, etc.) that we use to keep the instrument functioning properly. I am asking because I've used Mr. Metal a few times and, although it works great, it smells awful. There isn't a hint of an ingredients list either on the bottle or on the company's website, although perhaps Joe Schmoe wouldn't even be able to pronounce them in the first place. So, in an age where full disclosure of the health consequences of such products is either considered "anti-business", or a trade secret, how do we know what to do?

You'll need the MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) for the product(s) you're using. Those can sometimes be found on the company's website (either as a web page or a downloadable PDF file). For example, there's a link to the Tarnishield MSDS on this page:

If you can't find it on the company's website, you might try emailing them and requesting it.
