The bell diameter of this instrument in question appears to be unusually small, maybe down to around 20". Certainly not the 24" of my Conns and much less the present BBb standard of 26".

In my ears this does not speak against this instrument, as a feature like that one only reaffirms, that a sousaphone just is a circular tuba. Especially as the dimensions of the bell knee (which would be the upper bell stack on a tuba) looks generous in its dimensions.

I cannot disagree with the statements that this one is close to the 32K. The large back bow certainly is not out of the 38K-40K-20K strain. That would have taken a much wider bore.

My take on the 82K-mystery is this one:

This instrument is an experiment by Conn, which was deemed good enough to sell, but not interesting enough to market on a larger scale. It is not light enough to market as a lightweight version, as it has a full-scale body. And due to the small bell diameter, it is not visually very impressive. So “82Kâ€

I think I'm gonna have to stick with two theories on this horn:

- Some clown at Conn grabbed the '8' stamp instead of the '3' stamp on a Friday afternoon after a long lunch.

- Conn really did produce a horn designated '82K' and the records were burned. I'm gonna try to veryfy this on Monday by calling the monestery to see if they still have the original purchase record.

To add a few more details:

- bore is .734.
- pistons interchange with the 14K.
- bell tenon is 6".
- bell diameter is 24".

There is nothing special about this sousa with regard to intonation. It sucks! There is no way to play both the F and the Bb open bugle without compromising 20 cents or so.

I wrote to the Conn Loyalist about this horn. She thinks perhaps the 82K might be for real. There may have been obscure models produced that didn't get to the 'mainstream' market. I'm going to try to get hold of the original purchasing info on Monday. The suspense is killing me (drum roll).

Hi Dan, I just bought one in the Netherlands where i’m living.
Did you find more info the last several years, i’m very curious about the story.
