All of the era's are listed under the "classical genre" usually. Hell, Sousa marches are usually classified as classical under most record labels. I think of that as rather goofy.TonyZ wrote:Classical Music of the Romantic Era....tubatom91 wrote:I like listening to classical music of the Romantic era. I'm not much for anything from the actual classical era (Handel for example). I also listen to moder "alternative" music such as Death cab for Cutie and Kings of Leon. I also listen to a lot of stand up comedy (Lewis Black, George Carlin, Jim Gaffigan, etc.).
Curious statement!

Re: What you listen too...
I love his 3rd Symphony, especially the opening statement with the 8 f-horns!!! The trombone solo is bad-a too (though most cannot do it justice). We studied the whole symphony in my Theory IV class and we listened to the Berstein/NY Phil recording and it was amazing! There was never a dull moment in the 2 hour symphony and that takes a lot considering my musical tastes. I haven't listened to much other than Symphony No 1 and I liked that too. I like some of his vocal pieces but I haven't heard much of it.TonyZ wrote:This thread is also interesting in that very few of you list particular tunes. "I like Mahler." All of it, or does anything in particular move you? Just another curiosity.

You have to go a lot further out than that to even THINK you have the most eclectic CD collection ever!Arkietuba wrote:I have the most eclectic cd collection ever assembled. I have all of the Louis Armstrong "Greatest Hits" and I love anything by any dixieland group! I have all of the Frank Sinatra "hits" albums too. I even have the Spice Girls and everything by Wierd Al...I have no idea why I love all these types of music.
Do you have "The Shaggs?"
"James Reese Europe and the 369th U.S. Infantry "Hell Fighters" Band?"
How about Lou Reed's "Metal Machine Music?"
Ray Charles "Genius + Soul =Jazz?"
(4 pulled at random from my shelves... not even going to the LPs!)
Just sayin'

Re: What you listen too...
Lately, I've been listening to the album "Lateralus" by Tool an awful lot.
I love Frank Zappa, but don't listen to him much in the car, because I can't focus on the music as much as I'd like to. The Beatles get plenty of playing time, as does Billy Joel, and Dire Straits (whenever "Sultans of Swing" comes on, I just need to CRANK the volume). Pink Floyd is another favorite....
Ona warm spring day, though, there's nothing more fun than rolling the windows down, turning the volume up, and playing some Tower of Power.

Haha...well 'twas just a phrase. I meant that I have everything from one end of the spectrum to the opposite end. Not literally EVERYTHING but I don't know many people who love 50 Cent and also love Mozart or Schumann. Hurricane Chris and Galliard...Fat Joe and Berlioz...and everything inbetween. I listen to more than I own since our school has the entire Naxos library for free!!! I have about 150+ seperate albums plus the iTunes stuff I've downloaded. My taste is eclectic...is all I meant...never meant to say no one else on the face of the planet could possibly compare to me...haha I don't have that kind of a complex!David Richoux wrote: You have to go a lot further out than that to even THINK you have the most eclectic CD collection ever!

Re: What you listen too...
For me it has been 25+ years of working at KFJC - we have 4 rooms stuffed full of LPs, CDs, Singles and such building up over 50 years, plus most of the DJs are also collectors of obscure record and they can bring things from home to play on the air. Probably our weakest collection is "Classical/Symphonic" but that has been changing in the last few years.
http://www.kfjc.org - you can hear us live (and now recent shows are available from archive!) and check out playlists going back to the mid-1990s - VERY eclectic!
(My collection is only a few thousand LPs and around 1000 CDs - I have been cataloguing them, but it is a slow process!)

Have you seen the Michael Hedges segment from an older Windhamhill DVD recorded at Redrocks? He plays a portion of his soundtrack to "Because it's There" on a harp guitar. Nice stuff. Hedges was an absolute genius. Let me know if you haven't and I'll track my copy down and "loan" it to you after I test out my new burner.

Re: What you listen too...
Hey Tony,
If you don't want to wait, you can pick up the song on iTunes.
Michael Hedges- "Because it's There" on the Beyond Boundaries cd.
If you haven't heard him play, I suggest you download both the "Beyond Boundaries" and "Aerial Boundaries" cds. He is flat out amazing. Died in a car accident in '96 or '97. Real shame, he was one of a kind.
Happy Listening.
