Re: Tuba vs. Corvette
When I was first getting serious about tuba, I was also starting to learn to drive. I had been using my brother's car, but then he needed it, and so my parents decided that I should get one too. My father made me an offer; If I quit tuba and picked up piccolo, they would get me a Corvette.
I'm proud to say, I drive a Camry. That can fit 8 tubas on a good day.

I use either an Accord and put the horn in the trunk, back seat, or front seat depending upon the rest of the load....or in the back seat of our GEM, strapped around the gigbag to hold it securely

Re: Tuba vs. Corvette
I have two vehicles. a 1973 Chevy truck and a 2005 ford Taurus. my Conn 52J has the plastic Conn case. I can either 1.put it in the back of the truck. 2. the back seat of the Taurus or 3. the trunk. But, i hardly ever use the truck for a few reasons. (the biggest being that it has a 350ci V8 that gets 7 mpg....no not 17. only 7
and of course being an old vehicle it is starting to swarm and everything is breaking....we shall not mention the exploding gauge...... ) and that i don't want my horn sliding around in the back. I can however fit it in between the seat and glove box. But to the point. If you want a good gig car the Taurus is great. It gets exceptional gas mileage (around 25) and it can haul quite a few tubas (granted i think i lost a small layer of plastic the first time i slid it in the trunk.......) plus it is fun to drive. OK maybe not as much as a sports car...But. it will get up and go very nicely. and talk about cruising and cornering
plus if you ever want to car pool. We have gotten 4 people a tuba and a french horn on one trip. Comfortably i might add.

Get a Cronkhite bag. When I had my BMW Z3, I put a luggage rack on the trunk lid that did rather nicely for carrying the tuba.

Re: Tuba vs. Corvette
This may be a old thread but I must say a Mercury Grand Marquis (or any of the variants) is a very good car to haul tubas around in. You can fit 2 BBb sousas (in their hard cases) in it along with 3 people. One sousa in the trunk with the trunk lid bungeed down and one in the front seat (takes some work to get in there but it works). It won't be the most comfortable ride but it works for getting sousas from school to home and back. If you wanted to bring a third sousa, you could but you would have to loose the case and 2 people.
Now the ultimate sousa carrier would be the Mercedes Sprinter, if you don't have the seats in it (only if its the passenger version does it have seats) you could bring probably 8 sousaphones (possibly more if you can figure out how to strap them down) and a friend on the ride. Now both of these vehicles get about the same mpg (23, very good considering their weight)

Update to my Aveo: a few weeks ago I had a gig where another guy in the band wanted me to look over some of his instruments, and if need be take them in for repairs, as he lived out of town. It was a double bass gig. So, in my Aveo, coming home from this gig out of town, I had: double bass, Bach Mercedes tuba in its hardshell case, Carvin PB300 bass head, 1X15 ported cabinet with casters, three bass guitars, including one in a hardshell rectangular case, stands, and a small amount of accessories.

I have a BMW Z4. My euphonium and a music stand fills the tiny trunk.
My tuba hauler is a Pontiac Grand Prix. Its trunk will hold 2 tubas.

Re: Tuba vs. Corvette
My first car was a 1969 MG Midget. The tuba rode in the passenger seat. I used to put a blanket over it as the car had an imaginary heater. If you imagined it worked, it did. I didn't want to spend too long having to warm it up. There was enough space that I could get it behind the seats if the top was down.

Re: Tuba vs. Corvette
A couple of older guys in one of the orchestras I play with drive C4 vettes. I was surprised at just how little space was in the back of them, compared to over 20 cubic feet in a C5 or C6. One of them even mentioned how he recently sold his C6 for the C4 due to his wife's medical bills (THAT's a true man) and how he can't fit nearly as much in his C4 as he could in the C6.charlieJ wrote:We upgraded from a C4 to a C6 last April, and I just assumed my Besson 981 in the case would fit as snuggly in the C6 as it did in the C4....wrong. It will not fit in the rear, and I haven't tried the passenger seat. When I travel with the 981 I take my Saturn with 150,000 miles or my Chevy 2500HD with 100K+.
So, my question is - HOW did a tuba fit in the C4 and not a C6?
P.S. A couple years later, my original quote remains true:
MartyNeilan wrote:If I ever got a Vette, my choice would be a C5 as they as noticeably bigger then the C6 and lack the squeaks and rattles of the infamous C4. Wouldn't mind a C3 either just because of the sheer style, although tuba room would be confined to the passenger seat as their cargo space is nil.
I looked at a "4 door" Mazda RX-8 a couple months ago, and that can be a very practical sports car. What is lacks in sheer power it makes up in handling and "finesse".
Unfortunately, right now, my bigger concern is keeping my head above water, not getting my current car repossessed has taken priority. One of the nice things about being my age is that women don't really care what kind of car you drive. Corvette = guy with something to prove. Minivan = guy who has already proven it.

I have owned a C3 a C5 vert and a stand C5, as long as you use a gig bag ther should be no problem. The C3 was a little more tricky as I had to place the horn in the passenger seat. Witha C6, you should be able to get the horn in the back, bell first using a gigbag. Enjoy the ride as there is nothing like them.

Re: Tuba vs. Corvette
Enjoy the 'Vette — they are a joy to drive!! I own a 2007 C6 — it's my daily driver. No problem carrying a 2341-size CC tuba in the back, and when necessary another small CC or an F can ride beside it. Normally, I'll carry the tuba, a suitcase with my (drum throne) seat in it, a black stand and whatever else I need, including a mute. Lots of room — all you need is a good gig bag!

Re: Tuba vs. Corvette
Wow - I can't believe this post came around again. C6 is still awesome - limited for carrying the horn, but more than makes up for it on every other front. More room for a tuba than I had with my Moto Guzzi Le Mans III, 69 BSA Rocket III, 78 Bonnie...I could go on.
