That band with toilet seat mutes used to have the appropriate brushes as a handle for the mute to open! that was really big fun! (seen at German Tubaforum in Hammelburg 2007)

The ensemble in the photo is Tiefflug, the T/E ensemble of des Luftwaffenmusikkorps Karlsruhe. The occasion was their performance at 2006 US Army Band T/E Conference. If memory serves, they were playing Tuxedo Junction.

Pre-Beatlemania, in order to get the crowd going in Hamburg, John Lennon would wear a toilet ring occasionally.

Tuba mute? I throw my black utility hand towel over the rim so it goes down aways into the throat, keeping my hand firmly on the corner, so I can "fine tune" it, then quickly remove it at the end of the passage.

Bloke likes the 99-cent aluminum pie plates you get at the grocery store. He has a point: changes timbre like a good mute should, inexpensive, light weight, and easy to manuever. If things go awry, you can always toss it like a frisbee into the audience and distract them long enough to regain your composure as the director and audience lose theirs!

Just open the spit valve.
Amongst aviators it is often said that any landing you can walk away from is a good landing. It's an even better landing when you can reuse the airplane.

That's precisely what I do.

Bloke, thanks. You take teasing so well.

Some tuning can be done by means of adjusting the corks. If the mute doesn’t protrude sufficiently from the bell, the pitch is bound to raise.

Another approach is about pulling the main tuning slide. In some cases I have limited the pull by means of a string, so that the slide doesn’t drop off.
