Kids asking those questions that are "duh" to other people should not be the main focus. It is the symptom of a much deeper deficiency. It's not about The Star-Bangled Banner's lyrics or the idolisation of a diva or the corruption of the term "diva". It's about our kids not caring about anything not directly relevent to them and being satisfied with being ignorant little sheep. Things in our world are always changing and the sooner we stop all the ballyhoo over these little things that offend our sensibilities, the sooner we can get to work on raising our kids to be intelligent, contributing, unique, and creative members of humanity.

That assumes that the people raising their children have enough of those qualities themselves in order to pass it along to their offspring. I left teaching in the early 1980's partly because of the lack of those qualities in most of the parents I dealt with at that time, and I have no evidence that the situation is any better today.

Very good. Also, it would be a thrill of a lifetime for those sailors...On second thought, if The Department of Defense got involved, the group would have to have the right gender and ethnic combination. All of the branches would have to be represented. There would be a chain of command debate. Senators and congressmen would be fighting for a live shot. The President would weigh in...hmm...maybe having a self centered diva is easier.

Isn't this the Gaither Band's arrangement? I think I recognize those nice changes, and the questionable ones too. I think they changed the screwy ending, but I can't really be sure over the crown noise.

A few random thoughts on the SSB, and assorted presentations of it.

The melody is based off a drinking song, it sounds best done at a drinking song temp (move it along, not ballady tempo).

At eldest's high school basketball game friday night, the anthem before the boys varsity game was sung by several HS girls straight up and very well. a bit of an odd presentation as a couple of the girls had just finished the girls varsity game and were still sweaty and in uniform.

As long as the folks who are presenting it at big events are pop singers or pop singer wanna be's the over blown whitney hustonification will continue.

I also enjoy most of all a band version with crowd singalong.

My all time favorite was done at a rehearsal of a band I was in getting ready to play it for an A's game. the director passed out some parts, said "First Trumpets play melody, everyone else....play what comes to you" and so everyone played all the various moving parts they had ever heard, all the interesting chordal patterns that anyone has ever tried, and basically (as the director said after) "Grooved too hard on the SSB".

Before the Pacquiao-de la Hoya fight on December 6, 2008, the Philippine national anthem wasn't performed with the correct tempo or style, as stated by law. Consequently, people spent two year over this. And it was done outside the country.

From a Texas Tech basketball game a few years ago. Listen to how QUIET the audience is while they're singing! Yeah, a little bit of "stylization" but breathtaking.
