Bob makes me laugh sometimes. :) His Logic is similar to Yogi Berra.
How's that?

Well, might be 'cause "a trial" is to TRY something.

I think I got your idea?? that you would order and the sale would be "final".

I'd start with Craigslist Tucson:

http://tucson.craigslist.org/

You can list, post all the pics you want, it costs nothing, and you hit the local market, so you don't have to worry about shipping. You might want to list with Craiglist in other cities as well - I just drove 250 miles from Chicago to Cedar Rapids, Iowa to pick up a Conn 14K listed in the Cedar Rapids Craigslist.

Next stop might be Ebay with the "Pickup Only" shipping option. Only a few bucks to list, commission isn't that big if you do sell, and again, you don't have to worry about the shipping.

PM me if you have questions.

If you go the consignment route, check with Steve Ferguson at the Hornguys, http://www.hornguys.com" target="_blank. You may be able to drive the horns over there and spend a weekend in the LA area.

What I was referring to is people who ask for a trial just to putz around on it/use it for a gig/have never played that model before/... :D I've played them before (though just one I think), like it, and the only consistent gig I have doesn't like anything I bring in.

I've read a couple of testimonials here to the virtue of selling a tuba via local pickup. Guys who have done it both ways, and will never mail a tuba again for various reasons. If that works for you, you're sure entitled to put your tuba on Tubenet For Sale, or craigslists all over the region or whatever, and just say "come and get it."

Personally, if I were looking at an expensive tuba, I think as the buyer that would make sense to me anyway. Maybe some buyers get a rush out of that little thrill of dread as the box appears on the counter at the Greyhound station - will it be intact and unharmed? will it play anything like I expected? But over a few hundred bucks, it's crazy.

So, let's say your 182 has a buyer in Chicago. Take a couple days off and spend a few hundred on train tickets, and there he is in Tucson; maybe you could even meet him at the train station with the tuba. OK, a few hundred bucks isn't nothing, but I'm guessing it pencils out better for both parties than selling on consignment.
