What did you play on what horn over the Fourth w/end?

Played a few gigs but must admit I had the most fun marching in a parade that I've done for 30 years. There's something about playing Sousa on a Conn 40K that really feels great! (Yes, I love my Martins but can also really appreciate a fine Conn!).

A lot of NOLA Brass Band style and jazz standards at a kid's birthday party (well paying gig with great food and adult drinks) on Sunday playing my 1929ish Conn BBb 4 valve Sousaphone.

Played liberty bell, king cotton, Stars and Stripes, March of the women marines, star spangled spectacular, navy hymn, patriots parade, General Douglas mcarthur March, and a few more with the Two Harbors City Band in an outdoor band shell on my 1912 Martin Eb. Good crowd of about 300.

Nothing on the 4th, but played a church service on July 3 with a 10 piece brass group on my MW2141 Eb.

Patriotic songs played were God Bless America (prelude), and Battle Hymn of the Republic (postlude). Received a standing O after Battle Hymn.

4th of July Parade on Euphonium (YEP-321) in Canandaigua NY with the Pittsford Fire Department Band. Played the Usual marches National Emblem, Washington Post, Manhattan Beach, Liberty Bell, Semper Fidelis.

Played America, America the Beautiful, Battle Hymn of the Republic, God Bless America, God Will Take Care of You, Goober Peas, Let There Be Peace on Earth, Stars and Stripes Forever, This Is My Father's World, Yankee Doodle, and You're A Grand Old Flag. The sermon was on Star Spangled Banner which was also played. All of this was played on my 1909 Martin Eb Tuba. Church services at Avante Nursing Home and St Andrews Nursing Home and Coltrane Life Center Adult Day Care. These older folks really know how to celebrate 4th of July.

What piece(s) did you play over the Fourth of July weekend, on what horns?

Eb LaSete, a 4 valve rotary unidentified cold war "Western Germany" horn. Not as much punch as my old BBb 19" Besson, but much easier to hike around in the dark after the fireworks started. Stars and Stripes, El Capitan, Armed Forces Salute, Dogface Soldier, Semper Fidelis and a crowd pleasing Elvis and Beatles piece.

Washington Post, America the Beautiful, Russian Polka, Albia Dows Muscatine Band Tax Rag, America's Finest, Wootton Bassett March, Doodletown Fifers, Hands Across the Sea, Beelzebub (Bassoon solo), Dam Busters, Time to Say Goodbye (Soprano vocalist solo), Clarinet Candy, Artful Arty, Slim Trombone, Serenade for a Picket Fence, The Parting Glass (with bagpiper and tenor vocalist), Star Spangled Banner (Sousa arrangement in G concert), Stars and Stripes with the fireworks show starting with the last strain. Played my satin silver Conn 24J.

On the back of a flatbed tractor trailer sitting on hay bales, the Cupertino Symphonic Band paraded through Morgan Hill, CA playing El Capitan, Liberty Bell and Stars and Stripes Forever in turns.

I was playing my small-bore "USA by York" sousaphone. My section-mate and I were on the back of the truck and there was a float behind us blasting upbeat dance music at about 140BPM... it was a real struggle not to rush up to their tempo and our conductor wasn't actually waving his arms most of the time so we had some serious phasing here and there.

Fortunately the obnoxious float had a mechanical about 1/3 of the way through the parade so we were able to finish out in peace.



UPDATE: We took 1st Place in the Adult Band Category! ( in a field of two ) ...

Played my FrankenHolton 4pv Eb in my quintet gig at a church on Sun. We played outside first with the standard patriotic tunes, then inside playing a couple hymns w/organ and ending with Battle Hymn of the Republic. Fun gig that went well

Then on Mon. night (July 4th) played my 5/4 M-W 5rv CC (modified 2155R) in my community orchestra smack downtown in the city. Standard patriotic and pops tunes including Rogers & Hammerstein medley, Tribute to Louis Armstrong, Cole Porter salute, 1812, National Anthem, Stars & Stripes, etc. This group is mostly "for fun", and to have something else to play my "big horn" in. Went OK overall .......(would have been better if the trumpets & percussion were just better/more prepared).
It was interesting having a firetruck right by us and the train a couple blocks away..
Fireworks went off while we played 1812. But it is what it is.....

1100-1155: King Brass sousaphone with the One More Time Marching Band: I Get Around, Washington Post, Louie Louie, Hey, Good Lookin' and (I am seriously displeased with this) Take 5.
1200-1300: King Brass sousaphone with The One More Time Marching Band post parade concert: Imperial March, Hogan's Heros March, Night Train, Linus and Lucy, Manhattan Beach, Keystone Kapers, Washington Post and Loony Tunes.

On the 2nd, I premiered an awesome new work for tuba and electronics titled Alone on Repeat, written by Doug McCausland and performed during the final day of the SPLICE Institute. I'll be recording it soon, and I used my modified Besson 981 Eb tuba. Not your typical 4th weekend, but it counts!
