Roger Lewis, were you in South Bend when they had a Conn-type baritone bell on a CC valve section? I remember that from '86 TUBA bash in Austin.

I remember that instrument. It was just weird. I was not surprised when it never went further--it seemed to me that the bore was just too big for the taper.eupher61 wrote:Roger Lewis, were you in South Bend when they had a Conn-type baritone bell on a CC valve section? I did not remember that it was a Conn, though my memory offers no alternatives. That occasion was the first day I ever played a Yorkbrunner, and that experience dominates my memory of that particular elephant room incarnation.

It could have been and Olds or King or Reynolds...I'm not sure if I really ever knew. It seems like it was a 186 valve section, possibly.

Tell you what - I'll be in Parma over Labor Day Weekend; I'll swing by Villa Verdi in Busseto and see if anyone there knows anything about the elusive Verdi Cimbasso.
Anything else of musical interest in Parma 2-4 September or Milan 5-8 September?

Re: "cimbasso"/"Verdi hated the tuba"/etc.
Way too big for that application, IMHO. Totally throws the instrument out of balance. I am putting a .658 piston valveset into a small Eb. If that doesn't work out, It would be a good size for a C-Basso project - I doubt anything much bigger would be appropriate for the desired timbre.eupher61 wrote:It could have been and Olds or King or Reynolds...I'm not sure if I really ever knew. Darn it, I swore I wouldn't build one!

Hmm, how does the Orsi instrumnent in this other thread fit in this thread? Not a cimbasso but more of a quite large bubbie?!

It would be even cooler if you could somehow also substitute an appropriate leadpipe, using only the valves from the tuba.

Who else would have a double-belled tuba other than Tommy Johnson?
Why Jim Self of coarse!

A Yamaha 621s F tuba with an alto bell that goes into the fourth slide.
Cheers,

ps I still think the Jimbasso is the ultimate cimbasso design.

Re: "cimbasso"/"Verdi hated the tuba"/etc.
With the purchase of a 183 in the pipeline, I've been looking over at this extra main tuning slide. If I can find a couple 183 rotors, then one can go on the main as a removable cimbasso attachment. Maybe. Perhaps. Someday. Hmmmmmm....
In the Self's Jimbasso, the only sadness is not having the fourth valve available.

J.C., the Jimbasso is a 5 valve horn....you refer to the F with alto bell. Different things. Not snark, just clarity.

You're right... and I'm tired. I'm referring to the double bell tuba.eupher61 wrote:J.C., the Jimbasso is a 5 valve horn....you refer to the F with alto bell. Different things. Not snark, just clarity.

Now after reading all this pages and some googling I have found the real Cimbasso

(which translates to somethiing like:
Of course I am also cute says Cimbasso)
Yeah, the dog's name is Cimbasso...
