Re: Update Update

Post by toobagrowl »

So I had posted months ago on using the 5th valve on my CC as a "double tuba" for BBb also. Many ppl poo-pooed me. I cut the 5th slide to bring it up to pitch as a BBb A=440 when depressed. Long story short......the first slide in particular wasn't long enough to play Eb's in tune - I had to use really awkward fingerings. This was unacceptable because it greatly affected sound and response on those notes. As a BBb, the open partials are well in tune. So I finally realized (DUH  )last weekend while playing a concert (fooling/messing with my M-W CC during warm-up) that the 1st, 3rd and 5th slides are all interchangeable. With the first slide in the 5th, and the cut 5th slide in the female first slide tubes, it plays in tune as a BBb! :tuba: The cut 5th slide is longer than the 1st slide, but shorter than the 3rd slide.
I only have to pull the first slide (cut 5th) maybe an inch for Eb's while in "BBb mode".....and THAT'S IT. All other slides are pulled and set for proper length when in BBb mode.
As a CC, I have to use 1&5 for low Eb and 1&3 for bottom-line G. And lip a couple notes. As a BBb, I pull 1st a bit for Eb's and do light lipping for a couple other notes. That's it.

And there IS a slight difference in tone. As an 'open' CC, the tuba is slightly louder, punchier and more articulated. As a BBb, the tuba has a slightly smoother, darker quality and legato/slurred passages are, well, .....smoother and easier.

Great fun! :tuba:

What model is this? The Germans built great BBb tubas for years, and many of their early CC attempts were basically factory cut jobs that did not have quite the level of intonation.

M-W 2155R.

Honestly the intonation is pretty decent as a BBb - in some ways better than as an open CC. Of course many tuba players compare the pitch of this horn to Alexanders.

Whoa! I saw on the Noon news that our bridges are falling down! What's that story about Chicken Little?

How 'bout that asteroid the size of an aircraft carrier that's going to pass between Earth and the moon?

Dang... I'd better put all these tubas in a safe place!

Dan,

If you pay in just a little bit more, we can solve those problems. Can't you sell three or four of those Marzan's and send in the revenue from those sales? You'll be doing right by America. Stop thinking like the 1%. Come on over to our side...the American side... :|

You have been updated.

I love it when it works out like that! I recently repaired my Samsung big screen TV in less than an hour with a package of capacitors that cost me less than $5 at Radio Shack. The TV guy wanted $250. I've got 2 capacitors left over and I'm going to fix my Brother-in-law's next week. Not a bad outcome from a little online tuteledge, very little cash and a couple of hours of work.
I am fortunate to have a great job that feeds my family well, but music feeds my soul.

I also shot a squirrel through my patio door this morning with the 500mm Canon + a 1.4x extender:

That's what I'm talkin' 'bout! Win for the bloke!
For all Marching Band people who use a "Long Ranger" broadcast system:

When the microphone craps out (and it WILL, those damned cables are made from rolled rice paper), DON'T buy a new one for $150 or whatever they're asking this week. Instead, buy:

http://www.radioshack.com/product/index ... id=prod_cs

and use any cheap microphone with a 1/8" plug. Stick it to the man!

Pass this along to all your marching director buddies. It was a life saver this season.
