Way too edgy...

Where's Tuboss and his daily practice update? Maybe he's still practicing?
Ha. Right here man. As for update...I don't really have much of an update. Lower range dynamics are getting better. C below the staff and lower, definitely seeing improvement there as far as being loud down there. But ya that's it.
My first valve on my sousaphone is giving me an issue. It's loose, I can still press it and it'll go up and down, but overall the looseness is sorta bothering me. At the same time I'm thinking its not much of a problem but yea. I tried screwing it back and tightening which I succeeded on--but when I tried to play nothing came out...then I found out the air compressor thing (the plastic ring thing) was in the wrong place. So I put it in there correct position...but I had to make my valve loose to do that.

So...how can I tighten it it while keeping the plastic ring thing in the right place? Or do I just go ahead and deal with it? Thanks guys.

Tell you what, booboo...

If you want answers to these things, make a new post with a new title and maybe someone will read it and respond.

Those of us who repair these things and have a pretty good idea of the nomenclature of tubas have no idea whatsoever what the hell you are talking about!

Start a new thread and post a picture.

Doesn't seem to be giving me issues anymore. Interesting. Will keep a close eye on it and see if it loosens up itself.

You know, I wonder if the objection to the "edgy sound" may have as much to do with the music they are playing in those sousaphone battle videos, as the tone itself.

Clearly, the "Banda sound" is related to the edgy sound of the videos, but somehow I find it musically satisfying , in that context.

True OP. the style of music is a big factor. If you watch the tuba battle vids, you'll see that they play "modern type" music. And really creative spicy kind of stuff that needs edge. You can't play a piece by John Williams edgy and not expect tomatoes be thrown at ya can you?

As with some other styles of music, often loudness and distortion serve as a substitute for quality in the musical ideas.

Maybe that's what's going on with these battle videos?

Some of our tomatoes are almost ripe. A caterpillar started eating one of the plants, but we put out sevin dust...so everything's OK now.

I sure miss the Ed Sullivan Show.

I've gotten a couple handfuls of tomatoes the past couple days. They were delicious. Just the right amount of bite, not too edgy.

My 1st valve on my Sousa is loose and I'm not sure how I can tighten it. Any ideas?
