I've never had trouble with a trombone mouthpiece.

If you qualify, you might consider getting the TSA Pre-check. It lets you skip some of the extra security, like the shoes, taking the laptop out, because they've already checked your records. I'm not sure of the cost, my employer covers that because I travel for work. But it is definitely worth reducing the hassle, and they pull you out into a shorter line.

I looked up the TSA cost. $85, for 5 years.

In 2009 I got held up for quite a while at London Heathrow headed to Zurich...they studied and studied the monitor and eventually asked what it was - no problem once I explained it. But for a while there I thought I might lose it.

Do you mind telling where you got that? Are they available for sale somewhere?

I made those in my basement- every brass player should have a lathe... :)

They're modified Giddings and Webster pieces; stainless is great for experimenting since it doesn't need plating.

I've got some pics on Instagram, #tunablemassmouthpiece

But it's just a hobby, so not for sale at this time.

A good friend of mine (Schlepporello) has been trying to get different vendors to make something like this for years.

Oh, well. 2002 was still in the panicky phase, when TSA (and, for that matter, the Department of Homeland Security) was still being formed.

They nearly always ask...

Just don't take any real lethal weapons in your hand luggage, like nail clippers.

Off to China today from Moscow with mine, so I'm expecting full body cavity search.

Can't see it would hurt.
I also thought of printing a relevant Internet page with a picture!?

TSA pulled my bag off the belt, removed the mouthpiece, and asked me what it was. I said "tuba mouthpiece." One of the agents said "oh, okay." The other agent said "what?" to which the first agent replied in a snarky tone "musical instrument, man."

I doubt you'd have much trouble, unless you put little pieces of putty, batteries, wires, and a countdown clock on it. :P
This is almost exactly what happened to me (back in the 20th century), except the other agent said, "See, I told you it was for a tuba. I was in band, I knew what it was!"

Only rarely are they looking at it in visible light. The once or twice I've been questioned, it was the X-ray operator doing the questioning and the bag was never even unzipped.
