Spent most of yesterday preparing food for a birthday bash.

I will spare you photos of the musical entertainment. 2 soprano and 3 tenor ukuleles. No tubas, bassoons, flutes, piccolos, trumpets, drums, euphoniums, violins or handbells (although I'll bet we could give quite a concert on our primary instruments...)

I am not a big sports fan but I have enjoyed watching a couple of the world cup knock out matches.
Tonight we chose to watch an episode of Longmire and then watch the 2nd half of Germany V Brasil.
I can not believe the score at half time is Germany 5 Brazil 0

Does anyone else recall the lost tradition of men wearing roses on their lapels on Mother's Day at church?

I don't think it was just a "southern" thing but something that has held on longer in the south maybe. We tend to hold on to things like that down here below the Mason/Dickson.

Bearing in mind that in the US, the holiday itself goes back only to 1908. Which I guess is a long time, in the US. Yesterday I was making fun of the English sense of distance, which doesn't seem to have quite adapted to the invention of the motor car, and my friend the Englishman's comment on that was "In England, 100 miles is a long way. In America, 100 years is a long time."

I remember doing that when I was a little kid in the late 1940s and early 1950s.

Bud graduated from his puppy obedience class yesterday at the top of his class (which consisted of three pups total). The instructor was so pleased with his performance that she encouraged me to follow through with the agility courses. I was running him through his warm-ups prior to the start of his last class when I decided to see how he'd do if I tried to run him through the drills without a leash. The little stinker obeyed every verbal command and stuck with me like glue through the routine! I'm very proud of my little puppy at this point.

Well, CRAP! The display on my trusty Toshiba is acting up. It's a laptop and the problem seems to be in the wired connection between the keyboard and the lid that contains the display. Don't know if I trust opening the case and messing with the ribbon-wires.

We plaed El Capitan last night at the city band concert. I played the upper string bass part on my Martin Eb. I hit all the high Eb's without a struggle. Not a big deal for some of you but an accomplishment for me.

We had the opposite experience. A few years ago my SO wanted to get me a black cat for my birthday, which is in late October. She had a hard time finding any black cats up for adoption. A shelter worker explained to her that shelters around here won't release black cats right before Halloween, because some very sick people have been known to get a black cat and do cruel things to it.
Fortunately, our vet came across three strays from the same litter, two tabby boys and a beautiful black girl. They've been kind enough to let us live in their house.
One of the boys is trying to get my attention as I type. I'm sure it has something to do with food.
The girl loves to sneak into the "tuba room" when I'm not looking, and sprawl on the floor in front of my chair. Maybe she's trying to get me to practice more.

I suppose this isn't news to you, but FYI anyway - string bass notation is normally an octave higher than it sounds.

Well crap! When it rains it pours! The monitor on my laptop is quickly biting the dust.

Got home from a band rehearsal this afternoon and the AC outdoor unit was making one hell of a racket. I thought maybe the coil was frozen up and liquid freon was getting dumped back to the compressor. But... I've had the fan running and the compressor turned off for about two hours now and the compressor now fails to start. Oh well... It's fifteen years old and I suppose it's due. It's never caused any problems before so with the outdoor fan and controls also being fifteen years old I'm pretty sure the service guys will want to replace the complete outdoor unit instead of just the compressor.

You may find that the long term situation is not at all bad. When I replaced my 12 year old unit with a new 14 sear unit for a similar reason my electric bills were cut in half. That turned out quite nicely I thought. I will save enough to pay for the unit in 4 years.
