Instead of talking to your plants, if you yelled at them would they still grow, but only to be troubled and insecure?

Re: Update Update
Just saw four excellent music movies:
The Wrecking Crew - excellent movie about all those great studio musicians. It's amazing how many "name" bands really had these guys doing the actual recordings. I've always thought studio musicians were musicians musicians - if you know what I mean.
Twenty Feet From Stardom - the story of a lot of those great back up singers such as Darlene Love and Merry Clayton. I was blown away by the talent. The music is great as is the story. The interviews with a lot of music legends really shows the esteem these singers were held by a lot music legends like Paul McCartney. You can tell when Mick Jaggar talks about them he really stands in awe.
Glen Campbell: I'll Be Me - is a 2014 American documentary film about country music singer Glen Campbell and the challenge of Alzheimer's disease. Glen was originally a studio musician - a real talent who made the jump to being a name. I kind of had forgotten all the great songs Glen had and the talented guitar player he was. It really is an excellent film not only about Glen but the struggles of dealing with Alzheimers for not only the person with it but for the friends and family as well. I'm pretty sure we all have had someone in our life who has had it and how difficult it can be.
Finally there is the blockbuster hollywood film everybody has heard of by now - Whiplash. I spent four years under a guy that could have been the role model for JK Simmons character. The rehearsal/concert scenes were so real that I could feel the sweat breaking out on my brow. Thirty years later I still debate whether it was worth it. The rest of the movie is typical Hollywood stuff.
I would highly recommend these four films which are all out on dvd.

I'm on track to make more money ($XXXX) playing tuba this year than I have in any year since 2010. Less than many folks on this board make in a tuba-year, I'm sure, but I must be doing something right.

Re: Update Update
Update of my last Update:
Saw another excellent music film last night: This ain't no mouse music!
"Film about roots music icon Chris Strachwitz and the music that's the antithesis of corporate "mouse music" dominating pop culture. Since 1960, he has been the guiding force behind legendary Arhoolie Records, bringing Cajun music out of Louisiana, Tex-Mex out of Texas, blues out of the country - and into the living rooms of Middle America. Born a German count, Strachwitz fled his homeland after WWII at 16. In the US, he discovered, and shared, a musical landscape that most Americans missed. He takes us on a hip-shaking stomp from Texas to New Orleans, Cajun country to Appalachia."
Some of the folks in the film include:
Ry Cooder, Bonnie Raitt, Taj Mahal, Flaco Jiménez, Michael Doucet, Richard Thompson, Santiago Jiménez Jr., The Pine Leaf Boys, the Treme Brass Band, No Speed Limit, and many others. It's worth seeing just to hear the music -some great vintage clips as well.

And in other news...
A solid majority of New York state residents are in favor of raising the minimum wage over the next several years to $15 an hour, according to a new poll released on Friday.
According to the survey conducted by Quinnipiac University, 62 percent of New York voters, across every gender, age and regional group, supported raising the minimum wage.

I would be curious to see the demographics of the people polled--was it evenly upstate and downstate or mainly downstate (NYC)....Three Valves wrote:And in other news...

Re: Update Update
A bunch of people in broke-*** central NY state are going to cash in! And, a bunch of people in broke-*** central NY state who worked hard as hell to work UP to something above $15 per hour are SOL. Their achievements will instantly be minimized.
Not to mention, the employers in broke-*** central NY don't magically have more money to pay their workers, so that's not exactly good news for unemployment and layoffs. That is, this just recreates the have/have not issue on a smaller scale. What's better, 100 people working at $7.50 per hour, or 50 people working at $15 per hour and 50 people who are unemployed?
My grandfather was from broke-*** central NY. Beautiful state, great people, and they have a lot of great things there... but money is not one of those things. This will be a jarring change, and not all sunshine and rainbows like people want you to think.

Re: Update Update
I had a minor kitchen plumbing emergency last night (clogged drain). After some four letter words, I disassembled the sink drains, unclogged the pipe, cleaned out the pipe, and reassembled everything in about half an hour. I figure I probably saved myself about $150 by not calling a plumber. It's good to know how to do this stuff yourself!

Allstate ranks the top 200 cities for driver safety each year. This year NY,NY is #151 while Minneapolis is #81. That should explain it, but it doesn't factor in the cost of heating oil.

I wrote a bunch and then deleted it all.
But yes, I have noticed that. As one of the amateurs who refuses to consider a Chinese tuba, I have definitely noticed it.
