There are a lot of luxuries that most professional musicians can't afford.

As an amateur player AND a repairman.... I tend to lean towards instruments I can get parts for or instruments that I'm fairly certain can be rebuilt. That often rules out some instruments of about every manufacturer or origin (domestic or foreign).

The industry is changing so quickly I don't know how anyone can keep up with knowing if the 'latest and greatest' is consistently 'good' or 'bad'.

One thing is obvious... the professionals who are representing the manufacturers are only playing the best of that particular instrument. I can hardly regard that as being a good yardstick to measure the rest of the line by.

No... I am not currently looking for a 'new' instrument. Known to be good used instruments continue to be my choice.

Or they are provided by wealthy patrons. In any event they have to leave the expensive tools behind at some point. Don't know how I would feel about that.

yeah...you know...people who play tubas with fewer than 3 valves.

I too prefer domestically-manufactured tubas for which I can order parts ...like York, Buescher, Elkhart-Conn, Olds, Reynolds, Holton, Martin...

and parts-available major-brand imports...like Buffet.

:P
Yeah, Joe. We were just talking this morning about those Conn/Olds/Reynolds valve stems that don't work!

The Pentagon said Tuesday that its program to train and equip moderate Syrian rebels to fight the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria has temporarily stopped receiving new recruits at its training sites.

"We continue to recruit and vet potential participants for the [train and equip] program. As we review the program, we have paused the actual movement of new recruits from Syria," Pentagon press secretary Peter Cook said.

"We also continue to provide support for current forces on the ground and to train the cohorts currently in the program," he said.

CBS News first reported on Monday that the program was "put on hold" after some of the rebels handed over their U.S.-supplied equipment to al Qaeda's affiliate in Syria, al Nusra Front, but officials initially pushed back against the report.

It's unclear who made the decision to suspend taking in new recruits and when.

I've got a surgery date set for November 12th. Getting a double fusion. L4-L5 and L5-S1. They are also removing my bottom two disks. Two rods and six screws to hold me together. I can't do much. About 10 minutes of tuba a day. Not much moving, can't drive for very long. I'm getting super bored and stir crazy. People need to post more in tubenet to keep me entertained ;)

My small fundraiser for the church I ring handbells for (tuba quartet with 10-12 church folks) ended up with the full ensemble, their families, and about 15 church folks. I could not afford to order the brats from Wisconsin, and went local. The event was a success!

I thought her rendition was better than some I've heard. At least it wasn't 'stylized' and shreiky!

Leaving to play for a funeral of a dear friend who was a founding member of our quintet and with whom I have played countless church gigs over the last 21 years. I hope I can hold it together. She was a wonderful mother, wife and a fantastic trumpet player out of North Texas. Rest in peace, Debbie.
