Re: New forum software
The old forum had a selection for seeing all posts since your last visit. The new version just has a selection for recent posts, and included a few which had not changed since my last visit. Perhaps this was just because of the software switch, but I prefer the "since last visit" selection.

Please trim my last two posts to what you think should stay and what should go.WoodSheddin wrote:A LARGE percentage of the web uses font size declarations. So is it a "problem". No. It functions and is fully supported by the major browser implementations. Is it part of the W3C recommendations. Perhaps not. Either way it is a discussion for another day.ThomasDodd wrote:I should add. It's not the webmaster's fault. And it would be asking a lot of him to "fix" the problem.
I believe I wandered a bit out of scope.

Re: New forum software
Given that I am grouchy, middle-aged, barely computer literate, and hate change, so far so good. The two big on-line forums to which I belong (the other major one being the pashnit web site for motorcycling) have both needed to expand due to growing popularity, and as the expansion occurs, so do changes in format.
My thanks to the folks who keep this site up and running. And I agree, the "Friends and Foes" thing looks interesting. I will try hard not to be banned!

Re: New forum software
Thanks Sean for whipping the new software into shape so quickly, and for being so responsive to grouches like me. I posted this morning, then went to work all day. When I logged in this evening, I saw what had been accomplished and I was very pleased by what I saw and read. I agree that once you get used to the avatars, etc. on the right, the threads become much more about content and less about personalities. You were right on when you said we should just give the new software a chance and work with. Subtract my knee-jerk 'No' vote from the totals and mentally add it to the 'Yes' column!

Do it yourself. You can change your vote. Another cool option in the new software. Polls can be setup to allow vote changes.gwwilk wrote:Subtract my knee-jerk 'No' vote from the totals and mentally add it to the 'Yes' column!

I might put that into the style sheet. Looks good.tubaphore wrote:One thing I have seen that helps to visually separate quotes from other text is to italicize them and bring them down two points in font size. It works and looks pretty well, IMHO.

Re: New forum software
The Uber Moderators now have some account management, banning, and warning rights. Right now those people are Dean, Schlep, and my boss MoonUnit.
I am still going to do the bulk of the accounts management, but those other three people also have rights. You can shoot the entire group PMs through your messages control panel. Just add the group Uber Moderators to the message and we will all get it.

I wish the View Your Posts options would bring up just your posts. Instead it brings up the entire thread, and you have to hunt through it.

Yeah, some of those guys who have long sigs, like, say, those that have movies of their cute kids, can take up a lot of vertical space, too.Tom Holtz wrote:...There's always been a lot of vertical scroll on TubeNet, and software ain't helping that.
I don't really need the text to be too wide. Proper column width is no more than about two alphabets. Here's the test:
ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
Yup, I count about four alphabets on my screen. A paragraph with more than a couple of sentences might require a straightedge to keep from losing the line.
I block the ads mostly to prevent flashing displays that attract the attention of people who might walk by my computer. The software will render everything else at full width in that case.

Re: New forum software
Sean, one issue cropped up for me just now. I had been logged in since earlier in the day, and when I restored that browser window and reloaded the page, I found I was logged out. I hope that doesn't suggest this software is going to require me to log in frequently. The previous software never required it. Yes, I checked the box for staying logged in on this computer, and I have cookies enabled.

I have been tinkering all day. Earlier today I had the cookies misconfigured. Perhaps you logged in while that was the case. Try to reproduce it again.Rick Denney wrote:Sean, one issue cropped up for me just now. Re: New forum software
I don't like the poster information on the right.
I really like that when I want to go to another page I can type in the page number since before it was something like 3 page increments, the first page, and last page.
I don't like that when doing a search each result does not have the title in big bold letters on the top, but I do like the search options.
I bet I know of a former president who would have liked the enemies list feature.

I'm a forum software luddite. The one I like best is what Craigslist does, absolutely no frills.
That said, this seems like an upgrade to the previous, and I like the names and whatnot being on the right.
Keep up the good work!

Re: New forum software
It seems fine, except...
The font looks absolutely enormous to me, though. I tried changing the size, but all of the other font options are bigger!
I tried zooming out, but that screwed up the tables and made things very messy... Could we get smaller fonts, please?
I read that other people are having difficulties with the font being too small, |-: I think it's got to be that I have fairly large moniter.

Re: New forum software
Is there a key to the topic icons somewhere? Rollover help pop-ups make them a bit clearer, but for example, what's the difference between the animated text icon and the static one?
It takes a while to take care of all of the details of a new board. Another board where I'm an admin opened in December, and it's taken three of us almost 5 months to finally get it running like we want it. Every time we fix one issue another one pops up. Handling trolls and spam has been our biggest issue.

Re: New forum software
I liked the software two softwares ago (at least)...before the forum moved. You could see who was posting to a topic right up front, and avoid the ones that were being responded to primarily by people you weren't interested in having a discussion with. I think changing away from that software, when the forum moved, had as much to do with the lessening of the quality of Tubenet as anything else.

i like the control panel
lots of choices
would be nice to have maybe some other choices on skins or color choices
no opinion on the save button yet. does nothing for me
at 54 it is hard for me to read as well
