Rehearsed today.

Outside, >6ft spacing.

Messed up most runs, as well as any time i tried to use the 4th valve.
And poor breath management. At least i followed the conductor occasionally.
Pretty much double bogey for the course.

Once again i am saved by low expectations and a fellow tuba player.

Today, I felled a 5 inch (diameter, you jokesters!) tree in my backyard with an axe. Minor stuff, I know. But after living downtown for my entire adult life having a decent sized yard is a new frontier. It was pretty fun.

I had to break out the household electric chain saw yesterday to rid my yard of the logs, not branches, that were blown down. Across the street they had one puncture their roof!!

But really, it was growing at about a 60 degree angle, and just taking up too much yard space. It had also been very crudely pruned at some point before we bought the house, so it just looked pretty bad. Not sure what kind it was, but a very soft wood.

At that diameter, I think it's fair to say trees tend to be soft work for a sharp axe, whatever the species. Larger ones get a little tougher in the middle. I can sympathize with little George Washington, it's kind of fun work if you have good axe, but it's also nice to have trees, so one has to exercise some restraint.

Really I just love to type out that word, "axe". Ca. 1964 I was marked wrong on a spelling test because I spelled it that way, where the book preferred "ax". I was irritated enough about that, to remember it ever since.

When our subdivision was built nearly 100 years ago, the dopes planted these black gum trees between the street and sidewalks. They get choked off between them and when they are not crushing homes, they are dropping pollen sacks that resemble small bunches of grapes in the Spring and dried golf ball sized spiky seed sacks in the Fall.

I hate them.

Just up the block they have lovely cherry and sycamore trees.

No idea what I cut down, but too late for that anyway. We have a few enormous trees out back, most likely Linden trees (the neighborhood is named after them). They seem very old and very established. And gonna fall into my neighbor's house if anything happens. That said ... It seems like we don't get a lot of tree-falling weather anyway.

It's not a lot of land, maybe 1/6 acre, but almost all of it is in the back of the house, so it seems pretty nicely sized. Lots of neighbors, but lots of actually nice trees and large flowering bushes for privacy. Not much else needs to be chopped down or cut up... But so much yard maintenance!

Shortly after I built my house (22 yrs ago) I planted a 12 ft "sweet shadow maple" in the yard outside the back door. Today, it's a glorious tree, probably about 30 ft tall - it gives fantastic shade for outdoor gatherings, and has a classic beautiful shape. It's one of the best decisions I've ever made.

I'd highly recommend one to anybody who wants to plant a good quality shade tree.

I asked why you cut it down because I really DON'T like cutting trees down (I guess you could call me literally a "tree hugger"), but I suppose sometimes it's a necessity for safety reasons, especially when you live in a suburban neighborhood.

I've got a beautiful large catalpa tree (also about 30-40 ft) and growing right next to it and under it was a slippery elm sapling. I knew the right thing to do was cut down the sapling, but it still hurt my heart to do it.....

Oh, I certainly don't want to cut more than I need to... It's a well established neighborhood and a well (over-) grown backyard. A one way street to cut it down... But it was a nuisance, that probably had been ignored for a long time by the previous homeowner.

Sorry to hear about your buddy Bloke. 16 years is quite good tho!

My little buddy which I adopted in Cali before moving to Sweden was diagnosed with diabetes a few weeks ago. Had noticed his increased peeing, and brought him in. He's only 8. Really soul crushing to get such news. Not an option to 'put him down', while at the same time not fun having to give him insulin twice a day for, potentially, rest of his life.

Been researching and trying to do everything we can to get him into remission. He actually didn't need insulin between Thursday -> Monday, but needed it again today.

Fingers crossed, but your post hit pretty close to home for me due to our scare just a few weeks ago.
