I need a concerto!!!

As you can tell by my subject title, I am in need of a concerto. I just auditioned for the local youth symphony, for which I was the only tuba auditoning, and the director told me I need a concerto to try out with in the concerto competition. Now, bear in mind, this concerto will be played on a Rudy Meinl 5/4 CC tuba with a PT-88, so no French stuff, please. Just for kicks and giggles, I recently bought the "Journey" Concerto by John Stevens. After reading through it, and nearly throwing up because of the difficulty, I decided I could probably somewhat pull off the first movement. I told the director this, but he said the orchestra parts would be too hard, (it was written for the Chicago Symphony, after all.) So, please, if anybody would have a suggestion of a nice, not extremely difficult or extremely high, concerto for tuba, I would appreciate it a lot.

It gets played a lot, but the Broughton is a nice piece that is possible on a larger horn, and there is an orchestral version now. Just a thought.

One could pull out the Ewazen Concerto on C tuba. It's not terribly high, if you don't take the 8va section in the first movement. However, it IS a long blow. Also, I'll second the Frackenpohl.. that sounds like it may be more feasible for yourself AND the orchestra.

The competition itself isn't until later this year, around November, so I should have enough time to buy a piece and learn it by then, assuming I actually win one of the two spots.

The Gregson will work on CC, but it may be a little higher than you want in some spots. The Haddad Suite for Tuba is a pretty cool piece that does not go too high, I wonder if anyone (including Don Haddad) ever wrote an orchestration for it?

Good luck finding a piano accompaniast who will do it in that amount of time...I had a REALLY great pianist and he wanted quite a bit of time to work on the third movement. It basically has to be memorized by the accompaniast. The Gregson is good and it wouldn't take long to get ready. Good luck!

The Gregson sounds like a good possibility. I have worked through it before, so it wouldn't take me too long to get it up to the task. I'm thinking about trying the Ewazen, I always liked it.

Would anybody know the range of the Ewazen concerto? I'm strongly considering it, just because I like it so much. Also, has anyone heard of Elizabeth Raum's "The Legend of Heimdall"?
It sounds interesting.

The Ewazen goes up to an F, give or take a minor second. It's good and I really enjoy it. Heimdall is more challenging from what I've heard and played. I wouldn't recommend it by November. Ewazen or Gregson would probably be your best bet.
