Mouthpiece Question Again?

Post by humnbass »

Sorry,

I've read as many mouthpiece post as I could but I'm still not quite getting the answer to my question. It might be due to me playing a different instrument. I play a conn 20K sousaphone, based on the serial number it was built in 1940 or earlier. I've played it for 21 years eith playing jazz or dixieland music. My personal rythym of playing is more like an upright bass or electric bass guitar. I've been using a Bach 24AW for as long as I can remember. I have good mid range tone and volume and good high range but my low range is not as full or rounded and the volume is not there. (Sorry, I don't know all of the professional terms) I've looked at the Doug Elliott system but I don't know what to put together to fit my needs. I've looked at the Perantucci and was told that the PT-50 might give me what I'm looking for. Therefore, I'm at a standstill. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

mouthpieces

Mouthpieces are very subjective and I would recommend trying some first on a trial. Depending on where do you live, you may have a good music shop close at hand.

A bigger mouthpiece (wider and/or deeper) can generally assist with the low register playing. As Ivan said, mpc choice is very subjective and your best bet is to try some out and see what works for you. Having identified the issue with your current mouthpiece makes it easier to narrow down the field a bit. As it happens, I'm in VB too, and have got a sizable collection of new and used mouthpieces, including a PT50. If you'd like to get together and try some out drop me an e-mail.
