Tuba Advice

Post by fatemokid »

I was just wondering if anyone has played the Besson 995 or the Conn 52J tubas. I am looking to purchasing my own tuba and any advice would be nice. THanks

I had the oppurtunity to play the Besson 995 this past spring. I really didn't like the overall sound of this horn. It's not that great. There are far better horns in that price range. Try the Mirafone 1291 or Meinl Weston 2155.

I play on a Conn myself. although it is very far from being a standard one.. my best advice would be: The two horn you are looking into have some really great examples AND some really poor examples. Consistency has been a major issue for both manufacturers, so I would make sure to give a good play test. Also, dont limit yourself to just two horns, since the price range would include some other very nice choices (i.e. MW 2145).

best of luck to you

I have a 995 and one of my best friends has a 52J so I have had the opportunity to play it several times. I like em both. I love my horn alot but I do like other horns too, I think your best bet is to just get 4 or 5 different horns on your face(if possible) and see which one you like the most, everyone is different. Just my one cent.
