CD sale

I have no pride.

But....

I do have 934 CDs that I look at every day and say, "Boy, THAT was a good idea!"

After selling an average of .48 units per month, I have decided that it is more important to me to get these puppies out and listened to than to try to sell them for a typical industry driven price. So, until January 1, I will be happy, no thrilled, to sell my recording "Something Old, Something New...American Music for Tuba" for $10 a disc. Hell, I'll even ship it to you free of charge in the US.

I really did enjoy making this CD, although it pales in comparison to many new releases that I have heard. The idea of recording performances for others to use as kind of a reference while learning a piece is very appealing and, to be honest, I'd love to do it again. However, in this age of the MP3, I think that the CD is getting to be a dinosaur and that future CD projects will not be financially advantageous for your typical brass soloist. In the future, I'd love to catalogue some performances in MP3 format on a non-university based website and schill pieces one at a time. Holy copywrite nightmare, Batman.

Incidentally, my CD project was done because my Department wanted me to publish, not because I think that the world needed to hear me play the tuba. Having successfully jumped through that hoop, I'd love to get these things out and about and create some floor space in my office.

Vincent Persichetti- Serenade no. 12 for Solo Tuba
David Gillingham- Diversive Elements for Tuba, Euphonium and Piano
Walter Hartley- Sonata no. 1 for Tuba and Piano

Dave's CD is great -- buy that puppy at $10 with free shipping!

I can certainly sympathize with Dave's situation...

The other day, I was giving a lesson to a potential recruit at EMU, and upon offering the said individual a "free" copy of one of my CDs, he replied "I burned a copy from my friend".

Methinks he will not require a scholarship!

Seriously though, many young people are completely clueless on this issue. I'm not sure whether to me upset, flattered, or ... geez, i dunno?! I agree with Dave's comment on the future of CDs. It's unrealistic to think that broke college students will all buy a copy of the same disc. Sigh... My next release will be straight to vinyl.

In any case, buy Dave's CD, and rip it to your music folder!

And everyone asks me why I do not come out with DVDs of Jacobs videos! This is why - these days you cannot even break even releasing a recording.

It is a sorry state of affairs when someone like Dave has problems selling a great recording. I have been seeing this exhibiting at shows for many years. Until the law catches up with technology, you have to be a fool to release any recording.

I'd like to be around 25 years from now when the students who are burning everything they get their hands on want to make their own recordings for sale.

For what it's worth: This is not a homebrew CD-R. It's a real al-u-min-i-um CD, in a real jewel case, complete with informational booklet with pictures and plenty of info. It even lists all the recording equipment, horns, and mouthpieces used as well as stating the kind of piano used (iirc, a Schoenhut Concert Grand).

Unfortunately, Linus was not available for the recording due to prior commitments (I think with The Knobs).

I believe in the "username and password" system for a website which includes sound clips of your recordings, articles you've written and anythings else someone might pay a small membership fee for. The sound clips could be set to be non-downloadable as well as the articles. This would be a great way for very educational things to go out and get some money in return. How many of us would pay for a "song and wind" website which includes all the Jacobs masterclasses? I would without any reservation.

I got this CD on saturday and listened to it 2x on my free day (today), and I'd highly recommend it. Great playing on some stuff that wasn't familiar to me. I mean really really great playing. 10 bucks including postage, 2616 registered users and he hasn't sold 100?!?!?! I'm always amazed that we musicians don't support each other and then wonder why the non-playing public won't support us. Peace. ASG

I paid the original purchase price, and it was an excellent musical value.

Now that it's reduced in price, no one reading this should hesitate ordering one of Dave's fine CDs.

Yeah man, I'm with you on the check thing, but I recently had some uncool stuff happen with my paypal account, so I started using an automatic check writing thing from my bank where they send checks out that I write on the internet and it works out great, even set it up while I was just traveling to send bills out on a certain date. Of course someone will break in to this system someday also..........Peace. ASG

Mine came in last week and all I can say is wow! I particularly like the last pieces done with the UGA ensemble - beautiful stuff Dave.

You should be getting a check anytime, I mailed it a few days ago. He was nice enough to send it ahead of the check - what a great guy!

Thanks for your kind words. I appreciate your gesture, but people do not need to feel obligated to send me $15 for a CD, since it was I that set the price of $10. The short story is that they did not move at $15, but are moving briskly at $10.

I bought this CD this past weekend at SERTEC, and have probably listened to it front to back thee times since then. It is a great CD for any price, let alone $10. This is a truly great album. I agree with Doc in that the addition of the instrument and equipment information is very cool.

I bought this CD when it was released. It quickly moved up to one of my top 10 favorite CDs. If you don't have this CD yet, then get off your butt and buy one!!

When Doc resurrected this thread, he inadvertantly put my CD back on sale! Since Little Zerk is off to college in the fall, I'm afraid the price is back to the original $15.

I'm away from home until the 30th. Discs will go out upon my arrival back home!
