There are other removal methods, but most involve a lot of registry editing and restarting in Safe mode.

It's been a while since I had to scrape this off my son's computer, so I'm real foggy on what I did. I think Ad-Aware SE scraped off as much as it could, but it couldn't get it all because some of it gets tied into winlogon. You google for the registry entries and crapware dll or whatever, but you can't delete them because the crapware has them locked; and they get locked even when you run in safe mode.

I think I revoked all permissions on it, then it couldn't load. Then I could remove the registry entries and delete the bad boy off the disk. Then I replace it with an empty text file named the same as the dll and revoked all permissions on that file so (we hope) the crapware dll can't get put back again.

Like I said: I did this a while back, and sometimes I mix things up.
It seems like the offending dll was named something like atws.dll ???

Hey guys -

Everytime I open IE it brings up this Win-Fixer pop-up and basically automatically installs this random program and runs it. but I would still like to get rid of the problem.
HELP!!!!

1)FDISK
2)FORMAT
3)reinstall (everything)
4) hope you backups are OK

IE-Spyad is a good thing to get. It loads your Internet Explorer with a bunch of restricted sites that are not allowed to deposit crapware, tracking cookies, etc. on your computer.

Then if you periodically run Ad-Aware SE or something similar and examine the results, you can manually add to the list of restricted sites.

That link that Chuck suggested on McAfee's Help Forum is a good one. "Secure2k" is actually Mark Brown - a talented IT specialist. He joined as a McAfee volunteer on my recommendation a few months ago. He really knows his stuff! I too was a 'McAfee Maniac' for about 3 years - but don't much care for McAfee's newer products that use Active-X processing.

For anyone else who's had trouble with 'Winfixer', there's been some discussion on it being downloaded through an old version of Sun's Java application that may still be on your HD. When you update Sun's Java, the older version is not deleted - but left in tact for exploitation. SunMicro knows about this and is looking into changing the way it's updated.
