Westerwald Kaiserbariton

Post by finnbogi »

Has anyone tried the instruments from Westerwälder Musikinstrumentenwerkstätten (http://waldhoerner.de)?
I have been looking for a Kaiserbariton to use in my polkaband and this one is on sale for 600€.

I don't know anything about this particular company or brand but I think Klaus is probably correct about being of Asian origin. The old adage... if it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

In THAT price range, you might be better off looking for a used horn... possibly on German eBay.

Current 'stable'... Rudolf Meinl 5/4, Marzan (by Willson) euph, King 2341, Alphorn, and other strange stuff.

I would look for a used Cerveny (or an older Amati - they stopped making rotaries in the 80s I think). Those should run in that price range. Nearly all German, Austrian, Czech, and Swiss brass firms made these at one time or another, and you would be more happy with a Cervey, Amati, Lignatone, Lidl, or even happier with a Miraphone, Hirsbrunner, Meinl Weston, etc than with a new Chinese made one.
I recently got a used Lignatone (aka Cerveny) tenorhorn which sounds much better than some of the Chinese horns I've tried.
