when seeing the met. opera...
...has anyone ever had seats in the "family circle"? (also known as "nosebleed seats). i'm really interested in seeing a production in the next few months and i wouldn't mind paying next to nothing as long as 1. i can hear just fine and 2. the view isn't completely awful. anyone have experience with this?

I've been to the Met a few times, and have had pretty different experiences depending on where I sat. Once, I saw/heard Aida from about halfway back on the main floor, and it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience, both sonically and visually. My only complaint was not being able to see the orchestra like you can from a balcony. The last time I went to the Met, I saw Walkure from way up. The orchestra sounded great, but from that distance, I felt some of the impact was lost. Like listening to a great stereo that you want to crank up a little. And, from that distance, some of the detail on stage is hard to make out. If you sit up there, bring binoculars. You'll be glad you did. However, if you have the means, I think you'll have a better time sitting closer.

I've had some nice seats in the back of the Balcony.....just before the Family Circle. I love it. You can see and hear everything......even the orch. The MET's production level is very...very high, I can't imagine being disapointed with much. You might even prefer center Family Circle, to the extreem right or left box seat....even if you wanted to pay for the box seats!!
I'd rather be in the "Grand Tier", but I'm only mortal.
