I bought my son this 1920 Conn off of our favorite internet auction site, back in 2004 after school was out.
As it turned out it needed work. Valves leaked, dents galore, and Michael couldn't hit his E. We took it around and considered using it as a trade in for a new tuba. But got a used F.Schmidt 3301 - so no trade.
I had met Harv Hartman through tubenet and he had viewed the "Beast" back in 2004. In telling everyone about the Schmidt purchase he contacted me and asked what my plan was with the Conn.
We decided that to inprove it's chances on ebay, he would replate the valves and improve the general condition/appearance. He would then list it and we would split the $ once it sold.
well, it didn't.
So (taking a listen to my son - who wanted it back after seeing it on ebay) I went back to Harv and paid him for his work.
Today it showed up. WOW!
If he'd just open his eyes....guess it's just getting into the music
It's a different tuba. No longer a drain pipe it is a beautiful work of brass. Michael loves the mellow sound of the old girl. We may have to re-christen her as beast seems a tad out of place.
