Music Mastering Software

Sooo...

I know next to nothing about mastering music, and I would like to know more. Of course, I will have to take a class or 3 about it, but in the meantime, I would like to fool around with some software.

Of course, I have heard of Pro Tools, and I bet it is one of the best programs out there, but it is also one of the most expensive. Plus, as a novice, I bet it is like trying to learn stick on a Porsche. So, what else is there?

I have heard of Adobe Audition, Audacity, and Pro Tools. Are there others I should know about, and maybe start with?

Audacity is free. So it doesn't cost anything to try it. I use it, but my requirements are very simple. I use to edit the sound file from the compact flash card from the Fostex MR8, adjust the levels, and convert it to mp3. Sometimes add a little bit of reverb. Basic stuff.

Cubase is a both an easy-to-use program, and it has a lot of features and a great sound. A lot of things you can learn about music mastering will come through pure experience. Just use whatever program you finally get frequently, and you'll gradually learn the ropes.
