Well, I made a couple of Velvet's appearances in San Antonio, this past weekend. I was at the Saturday afternoon masterclass and also the Saturday night concert. I was very impressed with the comments she gave students in the masterclass. She, in the most kindly fashion, was able to get her points of instruction across very well, and achieved a noticable improvement with each of the students she instructed. I also found her to be very personable in the brief conversation I had with her.
Her performance of the Vaughan Williams was very well performed. I thought she was a little overwhelmed by the San Antonio Symphony's sound. In other words, the balance between the solist and the orchestra could have been better. All in all, it was it very enjoyable concert. How ironic that the orchestra also did the Dvorak 9th Symphony on the same concert as the Vaughn Williams tuba concerto. How many notes did Lee Hipp get to play on the Dvorak?
There were a few TubeNetters at the masterclass, in addition to myself. Lee Hipp served as the moderator. Also present were Ken Friedrich, Raul Rodriguez, and Ralph Alvarado.
San Antonio is often left out of the loop when it comes to things of this sort. I guess we are so far south and still a part of the frontier(at least in the perception of many). It was good to be part of it this time.

Re: Velvet Brown's Appearances in San Antonio
As a former of Ms. Brown's students, I can't agree more with your comments. Things can, however, be a bit different behind closed doors in a lesson.TubaRay wrote:Well, I made a couple of Velvet's appearances in San Antonio, this past weekend. She's a fantastic performer and teacher, and, if ever given the opportunity to have even one lesson with her, take it. PSU is lucky to have her.
