copying music from an ipod

i was wondering if anyone had a program (free preferably) that was capable of copying the music from an ipod onto a pc. i deleted everything off of my computer and now that i have an external hdd i was going to reinstate all of my music files. all suggestions are appreciated!

This website has instructions. It's little issues like that keep me away from buying an Ipod. [apple hating] If Apple was a little less evil and allowed your music to be transferred without a program, I'd own one, but the forced reliance on itunes and the fact that if you reformat your computer you have to download a program that isn't really legal to get your music back keeps me away. Ipods are intentionally designed to only work on one computer to prevent copyright infringement, but it definitely makes them less functional. If you search google, there are programs out there that can strip the restricitons from ipod recordings, and basically make the ipod do whatever you want it to do; It's just that most of them aren't quite legal. That's why I will never buy an ipod.

i actually found one through google called music rescue that's quite nice. i tried a program called eph pod and it didn't want to co-operate. the music rescue program basically lets you look through everything on your ipod and choose everything or certain media. it works as another form of itunes (lets you sync media). it's very user friendly and this is coming from someone that is, what others would say, less than computer savvy.

Yep. And it wasn't Apple's idea to restrict them, either. It was the only way to keep the record companies happy, so they could get the support they got. The iTunes store wouldn't exist if not for those restrictions.

Yep (x2).

If you're on a Mac, use Senuti ("iTunes" spelled backwards). Still the easiest way to recover files from an iPod.

And, the current version of iTunes can pull all of your iTMS-purchased files (including iPod games) from the iPod into your Library if you ask it to.
