RIP Joe Zawinul

Post by BopEuph »

That's three great musicians in the last month (or at least three that I know of). It sucks this generation is dying out. If you don't know who Zawinul was, you should. He was the founder of the band Weather Report and wrote many of their tunes (most noted for Birdland). He also played with Miles on "Bitches Brew," and is noted for bringing the synthesizer and electric piano into mainstream jazz.

Joe Zawinul

Born September 7, 1932; Died September 11, 2007.

Wow...a sad, sad day to lose such a creative musician. I was hooked as soon as the needle hit the vinyl of "I Sing the Body Electric" in 1972. I originally bought it because Ralph Towner was on it, but the combo of Zawinul & Shorter caught and kept my attention for decades after I went back and sought out more of his discography.

Today, here in Portugal, the radios are playing his music.

Peace to his soul.
