I got a paper copy of this in the mail today.

E-mail spam is one thing, but regular mail spam? (That is, unless it's real...but is someone really trying to give me a free $25?)

Please be careful if you Google this -- I got redirected to some weird pages that tried to download things onto my computer.

I can't say whether this particular one is valid, but it looks just like a typical class-action lawsuit notice.

If it is what it looks like, here is what happened:

- You have a Diners Club (or one of the other types of cards listed) card.
- You probably have made some foreign currency transactions.
- Some hard-working and honest attorney discovered that Diners Club charged you some hidden fees for those foreign currency transactions.
- That hard-working and honest attorney put together a class-action lawsuit, and negotiated a settlement where all the people who got charged the "bad" fees get a small amount (looks like $25), and that hard-working, honest attorney walks away with a boatload in attorney's fees.
- You should have the ability to opt-out if you think you can negotiate a better settlement on your own.

When and where was one of these attorneys discovered? Has this one been disbarred yet?

They don't disbar that kind of lawyer, they hire somebody to finish the job in a "cleaner" way.

I think Grisham's book "King of Torts" hits the class-action attorney issue pretty squarely on the head.

The settlement (if it is real) might help me pay off my outstanding debt on my Visa and MasterCard credit cards! I wonder if living overseas would void this thing...

Got one too, it's real (according to our local paper) but we're not eligible for any more than the one time settlement. It won't exactly pay off any debt, but maybe I'll take my wife out for dinner if her mom can watch the baby.
